Zack Snyder Talks About Superman Canon and Nolan

Zack Snyder says he'll respect the Superman canon.

He's already got his telescope out to spot the Man of Steel.
He's already got his telescope out to spot the Man of Steel.

For all you Superman fans out there chomping at the bit for any updates about the up and coming project, Zack Snyder has just thrown you a bone. He discussed the film in an interview with the Los Angeles Times and a few interesting things to say. Check out this quote:

“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies. If you look at  ‘Batman Begins,’ there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies.  In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”

I could honestly do a Defending Your Movie for Superman Returns, but if you’re going to reboot the entire franchise I think Snyder is saying all the right things. Respect the source material, but don’t worry about what any of the films before you did. It seems like a simple idea, but often times this very concept is what trips up filmmakers joining a big franchise like this. It appears Snyder is going to keep the fanboys happy, while putting his personal stamp all over this one.

Snyder also talked about Christopher Nolan’s involvement, something that has gotten a lot of people excited about the project. Here’s what he said about their working relationship:

“It’s been really great. Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator] … once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100%. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better every day.”

There had been reports that Nolan was actually taking a step back from the Superman movie, but it sounds like he’s still a major creative influence, which is definitely a good thing. I’ve got pretty high hopes for this one considering the talent involved. Let’s hope they reach all the towering expectations that have been set for them.

hmm nice to hear that he is doing some give and take with christopher nolan. Nolan being a director who I respect and probably one of my favorite directors.

Snyder has a personal stamp?

All I want to see is Superman fight someone and no Lex Luthor as the villain. I could care less if Nolan's on the project, since his movies have been nothing great but it will be interesting his take on the character along with Snyder's take.

@crimsonavenger:  I agree with you on who Superman fights.  I think Lex is great and an icon but I want a real villain for the "big blue boy scout" to tussle with in Metropolis.

I found Snyder's comments reassuring.  I don't want a new Superman (or Wonder Woman TV show) to be wondering what they did in the past or how will the audience who only knows the character from earlier movies reacts to their changes.  If he wants to kill off Pa Kent or keep him around it doesn't matter to me since both have happened in the comics depending on which origin story you look at.  I want Snyder to have a vision based off the source material but not be entirely beholden to it.

Of course I don't want him to completely abandon what makes Superman super and all the relationships the character has developed over the years, either.  I don't want him to discard it all like David O. Russell's planned Uncharted movie.

As someone who has little interest in Superman, I hope they do some good with this.

Yeah, it's so refreshing to know that we can make another Superman movie and 90% of it rehashing the origin story that every nimrod in the universe already knows.

He says "dont worry about the other films" as he lifts his villain out of the 2nd film.

Yo Batman/Superman cross over movie 2015. Co-directed.

Hopefully this'll be good, but I can't really think if any DC movies or heroes I liked except for Batman.

So that rumor about WB getting cold feet on Snyder directing after Sucker-punch supposedly had disastrous advance screenings was just some hot air?

I've never been too keen on Superman, never found him to be the most interesting hero.  But Snyder's involvement piqued my curiosity, then news of Nolan's involvement made me decide I'm going to end up seeing this at some point.

Zack:  "We're going to have Lois running towards Superman on the rooftop in slo-mo with her naked breasts bouncing around."

Christopher:  "That's awesome."

Zack:  "Yeah, and then I'm going to make them fuck in slo-mo, but it'll be a little hidden behind the silhouettes and shadows like I did in my other comic book movies like 300 and Watchmen."

Christopher:  "That's awesome."

Zack:  "Sure is, Chris.  Then, when they are done, I'm going to have Supes fly out of the window in slo-mo because he heres a lady getting robbed a few blocks down...and when he gets there, he's going to rip the guy's arm off and beat him with it."

Chris:  "Hrmm...in slo-mo?"

Zack:  "Pffftt...OF COURSE!"

Chris:  "That's awesome."

Zack:  "I know that there are going to be some people that are going to cry foul on this and say that Superman wouldn't do that stuff, but see, I thought about that.  What is Zod was in his mind telepathically by a device that can only transmit to Kryptonians, thereby forcing Superman to be morally corrupted?"

Chris:  "............I'm not sure..."

Zack:  ".............in slo-mo?"

Chris:  "THAT'S AWESOME!"

Zack:  "Man, Chris...I didn't think that you'd be so receptive of these ideas.  I know they break the canon and character a little bit, but I figured you would've probably been way more hesitant."

Chris:  "That's awesome."

Zack:  "Chris, are you okay?"

Chris:  "Can I be okay in slo-mo?"

Zack:  "...........sure."

Chris:  "THAT...IS...AWESOME!"

God. I fucking hate Zack Snyder's movies.
matthulizon March 17, 2011 at 6:13 p.m.
This movie is going to be EPIC!!!

I believe the movie will center on a young Superman, due to the casting of Diane Lane as Martha Kent. Similar to Batman Begins, we will see Clark learning the ropes to become Superman.

I just hope we'll see Superman fight violently. I want to see some blood and bruises on this one! c",)

So you're saying that you care at least a small amount if Nolan is on the project?
snake_runneron March 17, 2011 at 10:55 p.m.
@jakob187: LOL, it's so true. That said, I really like the way Snyder uses slow motion as a way of letting you take in the scene. He's one of those directors that uses every inch of the frame and really thinks out every shot. Almost like he's directing comic book panels. I really think Snyder should do an animated film.
mylifeforAiuron March 17, 2011 at 11:01 p.m.
Not a big fan of Snyder, but I do like Nolan a great deal. So, let's hope this film turns out to be more Nolan-ier than Snyder-er >_>

Dig Deeper into Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder is an American director known for comic book movies 300 and Watchmen. His shear theatricality and spectacle has made him over 50 million on his first four movies. One of his trademarks is the use of slow motion in fight scenes.
