Nicolas Cage is an American actor known for his roles in Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, Con-Air and National Treasure. He is the nephew of acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola.
Born Nicholas Kim Coppola on January 7, 1964 in Long Beach, California Cage is a member of the famed Coppola Dynasty of filmmakers and actors who, early on in his career, changed his last name to "Cage" in order to avoid the appearance of nepotism. His first credited role was in the 1981 comedy Brubaker alongside Crispin Glover and was followed the next year with a small part in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He gained wider recognition with his roles in Rumble Fish and Peggy Sue Got Married (both directed by his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola), leading up to him getting the role of alcoholic Ben Sanderson in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas and clinching the Academy Award for best actor.
After his Oscar, Cage in the mid-90s became a big-budget action film star and played the lead roles in The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off, all of which were massively successful summer blockbusters. In 2002 Cage was nominated for another Oscar for his performance in Adaptation, though the film was only a modest sales success, but he bounced back two years later with the hugely popular action-adventure National Treasure. Recently Cage has become embroiled in a bitter dispute with the IRS and his financial manager, Samuel J. Levin, over unpaid taxes and risky real estate deals. He has been forced to sell off most of his properties and many of his assets to pay the millions of dollars in back taxes to state and federal entities.
