Edit this Page
F.W. Murnau director previously directed The Haunted Castle

A German Expressionist Horror film that was basically an unauthorized adaptation of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.

Trivia:

The film company (Prana) were sued by Bram Stoker's estate for copyright infringement. This not only bankrupted the company but also forced the destruction of all prints of Nosferatu. Prints had been sent out for distribution, these copies survived and have been the source for all future reprints.

Is this your wife? What a lovely throat.

Bram Stoker's Dracula: Similarities

One of the ways in which the studio attempted to disguise the similarities with Dracula was by changing character names:
  • Count Dracula became Count Orlok
  • Renfield became Knock
  • Thomas Harker became Thomas Hutter
  • Mina Harker became Ellen Hutter
  • Arthur Holmwood became Mr. Harding
  • Lucy Westenra became Ruth Harding
  • Professor Van Helsing became Professor Bulwer
  • Dr John Seward became Dr Sievers

Bram Stoker's Dracula: Differences

The locations in Nosferatu were moved from London to the fictional German city of Wisborg (a name formed by combining Wismar and Lübeck. It is also set several decades earlier. The Count does still live in the Carpathian mountains.
Unlike Dracula, Nosferatu did not spawn new vampires. The dead humans, it was assumed, were killed by the plague carried by the rats discovered on an abandoned ship.
Nosferatu is killed by sunlight after killing Ellen.
