Often used trope, usually as a plot device motivating the protagonist to learn the "truth"about themselves, but sometimes also used to in plot twists and rewriting origins. If it's not used in the beginning it will be dramatic, grand reveal, all with the appropriate music.
Comes in forms of :
- "We are not your real parents", when adopted guardians reveal this to the child, just as he/she is about to be thrown into the search for answers about his (usually royal, mostly dysfunctional) "real" family, and
- "They are not your real parents" when someone else reveals this, usually causing protagonists to feel sorry for themselves for some considerable time. Villains use this trope to confuse the protagonist, good guys to open their eyes to the wrongdoings of their guardian.
