I don't see how this has any chance of making money. Oldboy has had AMAZING word of mouth and has been on Netflix forever. My guess is the audience for the remake has probably already seen the original and if not it's not hard to find a copy. While it's absolutely worth watching more than once if you're interested in film, I don't think that a remake has the same appeal.

I'd like to see how this turns out.

God dammit. God dammit. Just stop. Please stop. Just... no.

Why don't they just come up with an original movie, this will probably hardly end up being like the original anyway. Say what you will about how violent American films have become with movies like Saw and Hostel, they have nothing on Korean movies and there's no way they're going to be able to keep all the SPOILER WARNING: Click here to reveal hidden content.
stuff in there, thus ruining the entire point of the movie. I'm such a big fan of Oldboy that I'm probably going to have to see the remake anyway but I would much rather see Spike Lee directing something that is actually original. Stop fucking with beloved foreign movies, Hollywood!

i don't think spike lee is bad, but i don't think he should be the one directing this project

I wonder how long it will take for him to start bringing race into it. I love Do the Right Thing, but sometimes this guy is just an ass. The whole "controversy" about Flags of Our Fathers really sealed the deal for me.

Great. A perfectly awesome movie being remade for stupid Americans who can't be bothered to read. Maybe they can rape Dog Tooth and Mother too

By the way, you probably don't want to watch Oldboy on streaming because last time I checked it was dubbed. Maybe I'm the only one who cares about that though.

This movie does not need to be made. The dubbing is superb, and the movie itself is only like 8 years old. We dont need this. Stupid hollywood sees one foreign movie being remade in Girl with the Dragin Tattoo, and decides to cash in. This is how we got that half-imagined Gi Joe movie. no matter how much talent you put behind it, if your just making something for makings sake, it wont be as good as it could have been. Wait a few more years, get the original creators involved, and then do it.

I totally agree that considering most Hollywood directors, I think Spike Lee is a brave choice and sounds better than most. And also, the Streaming version of Oldboy is dubbed and therefore unwatchable. I love the movie, but Netflix needs to stop putting dubbed movies up. Anyone who likes or even doesn't mind dubs is crazy, because the actor's performance is no longer relevant and then what's the point?

dont really understand that point of view.
GOOD dubbing is almost exactly like cartoon work. You just get the right emotions in your voice to match the actors acting. I dont see exactly how the actors acting is negated by a different voice. They still move and emote in the same way, they are just speaking in a language you understand. I have seen the original Oldboy, and when i saw the dubbed version i enjoyed it a little bit more, because i wasnt missing little movements and settings because i was reading.

Well, that's a terrible choice.

Who can they cast to capture the strange intensity of Min-sik Choi?

"I have a feeling Lee's version will be fine, so far as remakes go, but still - it'll have a hard time topping the original." <- I can imagine a remake of Oldboy to be more successful than the original, but it won't be a better movie.

Talking about remakes.. I'm still amazed that Scorsese took the story of a fantastic movie, copied all the important parts 1:1, made the ending worse and still won his first Oscar as a director (an Oscar he arguably did not deserve).

huh.... uh.... you know, I am speechless. I don't even know what to expect, considering at one point the rumor was Spielberg was directing the remake.... and still no words on the manga rights and the films rights are all settled... I don't know... for some reason I keep thinking of Lee's collaboration with Scorsese on Clockers then anything he's done in the past 15 years.

I'm curious to see how this turns out. I'm not particularly excited by the news, but I'm interested to see how it turns out.
