Black Panther comes to the Avengers seeking aid to reclaim his country from the tyranny of M'Baku the Man Ape, HYDRA and Ulysses Klaw.

Synopsis

Just as the Avengers are attempting to identify the mysterious man in black who assisted Captain America, the masked man in question arrives at their front doorstep. After a brief altercation, the man introduces himself as T'Challa, the prince of the African nation of Wakanda. He informs them that his country has been overtaken by the villainous Man-Ape, and that he needs their assistance in taking it back. Between Wakanda's vast resources of the rare and potentionally dangerous metal vibranium and the involvement of both HYDRA and the mercenary Ulysses Klaw, the Avengers agree to help.

As the Avengers attempt to fly in stealthily into Wakanda, their Quinjet is shot do wn. After crash landing, the team splits into two teams: Black Panther and Captain America sent to track down the tyrannical Man-Ape, and Ant-Man, Wasp and Iron Man tasked with keeping the Wakandan army busy.

Within the famed Vibranium Mound, Man-Ape, Klaw and HYDRA agent the Grim Reaper negotiate the sale of the Vibranium to HYDRA. While Man-Ape is willing to sell the metal for less than it is actually worth to HYDRA, Klaw demands just compensation for serving as the go-between for HYDRA. Before negotiations can turn violent, the trio of villains are informed that Wakanda has been invaded.

The Black Panther eventually reaches the throne of Wakanda, and challenges Man-Ape to combat, the traditional way of claiming the kingdom of Wakanda to become the new ruler. Man-Ape rejects the challenge however, having his personal guard attack the Black Panther. When the guards have the death blow against the Black Panther in their grasp, Captain America steps in. He allows the Black Panther to have his personal vendetta with the Man-Ape settled while he deals with the personal guards himself.

Within the Vibranium Mound, the second team of Avengers confronts the Grim Reaper and Ulysses Klaw as HYDRA attempts to claim their wealth of vibranium. In the ensuing battle, Klaw's sonic emitter disturbs the vibranium-lined walls enough that he transforms into a giant, monstrous form of pure sound. He begins to attack both HYDRA and the Avengers and threatens to collapse the entire Vibranium Mound, causing Reaper to pull out of the deal before he and his men are killed.

The Black Panther defeats the Man-Ape in one-on-one combat, by tradition making him the new rightful leader of Wakanda. The moment of celebration is interrupted, however, as Klaw's sound form escapes through the roof of the Vibranium Mound, attacking all who can hear his powerful vibrations. Hank Pym and Iron Man, within the mound, create a casing of sorts of Vibranium, capable of capturing the sonic emitter and containing its dangerous sound waves, thus capturing Klaw's sound form.

Back at the throne of Wakanda, the people of Wakanda are pleased that the rightful kind of Wakanda has returned and that the "old ways" have been restored. Black Panther, however, declares that the old ways much change, establishing a democratic council of the people of Wakanda rather than an autocratic monarch. For his part, T'Challa shall return to the "outside world" as a member of the Avengers and ambassador of Wakanda.
