Overview

The third film in the Paranormal Activity franchise, Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel set 18 years before the events that occur in the first two Paranormal Activity films. The film takes place in 1988 following the story of the one of the characters that was introduced in the first film-Katie. The plot revolves mainly around her and her sister in 1988 in which they experienced events that would be similar to ones they would experience years later in Paranormal Activity 2 and then in Paranormal Activity.

Plot Summary

The film begins with Katie (Katie Featherston) delivering in 2005 dropping off a box of VHS tapes to her sister, Kristi (Sprague Grayden) who is pregnant and married to Daniel (Brian Boland). After a year, Kristi and Daniels house appears to have been burglarized and the tapes stolen.

Almost 18 years prior, a younger Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) are living their mother Julie (Lauren Bittner) and her boyfriend (Christopher Nicholas Smith). During this time, Kristi develops and befriends and invisible friend, whom she calls Toby.

Julie and Dennis (who has noticed that ever since Kristi has been talking to Toby strange things have been happening in the house,) one night decide to make a sex tape, but are interrupted when an earthquake strikes. During the ensuing search for the two girls, the camera which was meant for the sex tape, picks up the dust falling from the ceiling and land on an invisible object in the room. The object then moves and the dust fall to the floor. Afterwards, Dennis shows the footage to his friend Randy (Dustin Ingram) who comes up with the idea to place cameras around the house to record anything else. Later that night the camera’s pick up Kristi waking up and talking to Toby off-camera, which Dennis asks her about the next day. Once more disturbing events happen at the house, Dennis discovers a symbol that is tied to demonology. After discovering this, Dennis tells Julie that the symbol was once used as the symbol for a witches’’ coven that brainwash girls into having sons and forget about that they were pregnant. However, Julie does not believe him.

A little while later, Randy is babysitting Katie after Kristi becomes sick and must be taken to the hospital. Katie convinces Randy to play blood Mary with her, and after they say bloody Mary three times and turn the light off, nothing happens. However, they try again, and on the second attempt Randy turns out to have a large scratch on the side of this abdomen. Once he tries to leave the bathroom a black figure moves through the doorway and prevents Randy from leaving. Once Randy tries to leave a second time, furniture around the house is tossed around the house. Only after Julie and Dennis return is Randy able to make his escape, running out of the house.

The black figure turns out to be a demon that is living in the house. This demon begins to terrorize Kristi and Katie, and even goes so far as hurting Katie and at one point drags her into the girls’ bedroom closet and does not let her out until she does what the demon wants. After refusing to take Katie to her grandmother Lois’, Julie is witness to some terrifying activity in the house, Julie then decides to take Katie to Lois’. Dennis meanwhile, sets up another camera in a new bedroom in the house. One night before bed, Kristi dresses up as a bride and says that the groom is Toby when asked, this upsets Julie who does not want to hear that name. Later that night, the family is woken up by the sound of a car pulling in. Julie believes that it is Lois and goes to check it out after hearing more noises.

After Julie does not come back, Dennis goes to check on her, in the meantime one of the camera’s records a shadowy female figure, Dennis ends up coming back for the camera. While downstairs, Dennis notices someone behind a curtain, however when he investigates, nothing is actually behind the curtain. The next room he enters begins to have strange imagery on the walls and the symbol that was in the girls’ room is now present as well which was hidden beneath a framed painting. Eventually Dennis ends up in the garage where he finds Lois and other women dressed in black. Dennis runs back into the house with Lois and the women in pursuit, where he finds Julie at the top of the stairs. As Dennis gets closer to Julie he realizes that Julie Is levitating. Her body is then thrown hitting Dennis and knocking him back down the stairs. After getting up, he sees Kristi, he grabs her and runs into the closet.

After something or someone bangs on the closet door and growls, Dennis and Kristi leave. While walking through the kitchen, Dennis sees the group of women and Lois in the garden outside circling around a bonfire. Dennis and Kristi eventually find Katie, who is crying beside Julie’s body. Right as Dennis puts his hand on the back of Katie’s shoulder, she turns and lets out a demonic scream that throws Dennis across the room breaking his leg. Dennis attempts to crawl toward Julie but Lois stops him. As she looks down onto him, Dennis’ body is suddenly twisted and is snapped backwards in half. Kristi then reappears and moves toward Lois who calls for Katie. As all three head upstairs, Kristi calls to Toby, then there is a sound of movement and a growl as the camera stops recording.
