The movie centers around a Katie and Micah, a young couple who live in the suburbs. Katie has been experiencing some frightening things at night, so Micah decides to document it so they can see what exactly goes on when they sleep. They eventually have a psychic come to analyze the situation and they eventually discover that a demon is after Katie.
The hauntings at night become more and more intense, such as when they find an old burned picture of Katie in the attic. The picture was right above where their bed is and it was supposed to be lost in the fire that Katie had when she was a child. Micah becomes intent on getting a Ouija board into the house to further find out about the demon. Katie strongly objects, saying she doesn't want to invite it in. After an argument, Katie and Micah leave, leaving the Ouija board on the table. The board lights itself on fire and moves the piece around and puts itself out before they come back home.
Micah finds the board and discovers that there are markings on it. He checks the tape to see what happened to the board and Katie refuses to see what happened. Micah comes up with possible solutions for what the Ouija board piece said, and it leads them to the Internet to websites about a woman who was possessed and had an exorcism. She later died.
Katie eventually becomes possessed by the demon. In the theatrical version, she walks downstairs (her footsteps being incredibly loud due to her possession) and she screams. Micah runs downstairs and he screams. After a few seconds of silence, Katie's footsteps back up the stairs begin. Micah's body flies at the camera, knocking it over. Katie emerges from the shadows and walks toward Micah's body. She crawls and looks at it, then at the camera. She lunges at the camera, ending the movie.
In an alternate ending, Katie goes downstairs and screams. Micah runs downstairs and is heard screaming. Katie comes back upstairs with a knife in her hand. She approaches the camera and slits her throat in front of the camera. She falls and the movie ends.
In another alternate ending, Katie gets up and goes downstairs and screams like in the other endings. Micah runs downstairs. We hear Micah scream and then everything goes silent. She comes back upstairs with blood on her shirt and sits down by the bed. She rocks back and forth while the camera's clock accelerates over a few days' time. While she does this, we hear people call to see what is going on because they haven't heard from Katie or Micah for days. The doorbell rings and Amber comes in to check everything out. We hear her scream, indicating that she has found Micah dead. The police show up and Katie approaches them. She still has the knife in her hand and the police shoot her. A split second before she falls down dead, the door in the back of the hallway (the spare bedroom next to the attic room) behind the police closes, indicating the demon left before Katie was killed.
