Plot Synopsis

A birthday party for a pet alligator? Sure, why not?
A birthday party for a pet alligator? Sure, why not?
Party planner extraordinaire Pinkie Pie is throwing a birthday party for her pet toothless alligator, Gummy, and excitedly invites all her friends in person. (as well as through singing telegram) As always, the girls all have a great time, even though Pinkie Pie's behavior is tiring at times. Never wanting the party to end, Pinkie Pie calls out to the girls and offers for them to stay awhile longer. They all politely turn her down, though Twilight Sparkle assures her that they should do it again sometime: this gives Pinkie Pie an idea.

 Yes. "This afternoon" this afternoon.

Twilight is awoken to Pinkie Pie's arrival at the library, who excitedly invites her to Gummy's after-birthday party. Twilight is surprised by the offer, as well as bothered by it. So she uses her magic to pile up a clutter of books in the library and makes an excuse about being busy. Pinkie Pie, undeterred, believes a party is still a party, no few the company, and seeks out the other girls. When she greets them, they too all make drastic excuses and turn her down. By the time she returns to the room at the Sugar Cube Corner, Pinkie Pie is more than suspicious about her friends' behaviors.

Upon realizing that they had all made excuses, Pinkie Pie notices Twilight Sparkle sneaking her way into the Sugar Cube Corner. She eavesdrops on Twilight; who is picking up a package and telling the owner to keep the situation a secret from Pinkie Pie. She proceeds to follow Twilight through town, who then drops off the package with Rarity, who drops it off with Fluttershy. She overhears a conversation between the two girls about the planned after-birthday party. She is saddened to hear that the girls had, in-fact, fabricated excuses to not show up and do not want her to know about what is going on. Rainbow Dash walks by and greets Pinkie Pie; not only blowing Pinkie's cover but her's as well. Pinkie Pie chases after Rainbow Dash through town, questioning her on why she didn't want to come to her party as well as the contents of her bag.

Rainbow Dash arrives, frantically, at Applejack's; who is left to keep Pinkie Pie from entering the barn she flew into. She tells her that they are just doing 'construction', and that Rainbow was simply bringing tools. The girls, all hiding in the barn, make construction noises to back this up. Pinkie Pie, angered by their outright lies and secrets, leaves the farm and seeks out Spike to find out what they are doing.
 "WHERE&squot;S HARVEY?!"
 "WHERE'S HARVEY?!"

She tries to get Spike to talk by offering a plate of gems in exchange for the information he knows. Spike, either been kept out of the loop or confused about Pinkie Pie's demands, fails to give her the answers she wants. Frustrated, Pinkie outright tells Spike that she wants him to tell her that her friends hate her parties and have abandoned her. Only wanting the gems, he repeats her statement word-for-word; which 'gives' her the proof. Immediately, Pinkie Pie's hair 'deflates' back to her original straight form; signifying that she has become depressed and alone.

Because who doesn't want to watch a happy-go-lucky pony suffer a complete mental breakdown in front of children?

Pinkie Pie, convinced that her best friends have left her, throws Gummy's after-birthday party with her new friends: a bucket of turnips, a pile lint, a bag of flour, and a stack of rocks. Disturbingly, she appears to have cracked from the sudden abandonment- pretending that the inanimate partygoers are real as well as telling her to forget about the other ponies. Near the peak of her mental breakdown (did I mention this is a kid's show?) Rainbow Dash arrives and tries to make amends with the poor girl. Pinkie Pie  wants nothing to do with her and expresses her feelings through her new friends. Creeped out by Pinkie Pie's imaginary party, she forcefully drags Pinkie Pie away from her sulk and back down to Sweet Apple Acres.

 PARTY HARD.
 PARTY HARD.
There, she shows her what she and the girls were doing in the barn, which was also the real reason why they were avoiding her: a surprise birthday party. Pinkie Pie, who had totally forgotten her own birthday returns to her normal, happy self. Making amends, she joins in a very special celebration. In the narration, Twilight Sparkle writes to Princess Celestia about always expecting the best of one's friends, and never the worst.
