Pink Floyd The Wall (1982)

Edit this Page
Alan Parker Director previously directed Shoot the Moon

A slight autobiography for frontman Roger Waters, The Wall tells the story of Floyd Pinkerton, a rock star who loses touch with humanity and builds the titular wall around his mind.

Trivia:

Two songs in the film were not from the original album. "When the Tigers Broke Free", which told the story about how Roger Walter's father died during World War II, was later included on "The Final Cut", which was the last album the Walters was part of before leaving Pink Floyd. The other track "What Shall We Do Now?", which is heard during the second animated sequence (after a changed version of "Empty Spaces"), was originally meant to be on the album but was omitted due to the time restraints of vinyl format.

Pink Floyd The Wall is a 1982 adaptation of the 1979 rock opera of the same name. As was the case of the album, the movie is loosely based on the life of Roger Walters, the band's bassist and songwriter at the time. It also has a few references to the late Syd Barrett, the band's founder, who was kicked out due to his strange behavior and drug use.

The movie has few lines of dialogue, with most of it based on background audio and lines from the album. Gerald Scarfe, who provided animations for Pink Floyd's live shows at the time, provides animated sequences for the film; some using recycled bits from past shows.

Plot Overview

Pink ( Bob Geldof) is an exhausted British rock star who is haunted by his past and burnt out from the rock star life. He sets alone in a trashed Los Angeles hotel room watching old WWII films and growing increasing detached from the real world and those around him. He builds a figurative "wall" in his mind, which is used to describe this detachment. As the film progresses it cuts to scenes from his childhood in post WWII England, his schoolboy years, his life as a rock star, the death of his father, and a dream world (set inside the confines of his mental 'wall') where he believes he is a skinhead leader and eventually puts himself on trial.
