Well is more than a week since I began to use Netflix (from here on shall be known as Mexflix to distinguish it from the US netflix ... oh by the way the name was given by @sissylion , another screened user) I promised a blog about it so here goes:
Tis was September 16 early mornin , a national holiday , our independence day , a good day for a new entretainment service , I was chillin at my house (not that it is that unusual , Im always chillin at my house the perks of a work that can be done without leaving the apartment , administrating a building leaves you a lot of spare time :P ) enters my mother to my room saying : "Dear son , you remember that mexflix thingy ye told me about? I just saw a tv comercial for it" , I thought about time , I ´ve been waiting for it , so I grab a pack of proscuito ham (love that thing) , open it , my soda ready and turn on the PS3 ... lets do this >:3
PS3 loads up , see the Mexflix client , press x , need a 16 mb download ..... first slice ..... takes a minute ... done , enters the app ... cant log in , need to accept new EULA , ok fine , goes to PSN to do that ...done , second slice. Enters Mexflix ... new member? Yep , no account ... make new one ... ok a free month trial :D hell yeah I want.... account creation less than 2 minutes , input credit card info , done .... unlimited streaming plan will only cost $99 pesos ... wow that is cheap .... ends process and finally enters Mexflix.
The first thing that I notice is that on the tv shows section I see mexican shows on it .... hmmmfff looks like Televisa´s content (the biggest of the 2 tv networks in Mexico) , they must have either made the deal with Mexflix or being the ones who brought it to Mexico , that wouldn´t surprise me. Well I decide to see the first episode of Law and Order : Criminal Intent ... it is only available in spanish :( ; ok this is one of the bad sides of Mexflix , many of the audio tracks are only available in Spanish or Portugese (I dont know why) or the english track is there , no subtitles or sometimes forced subtitles so there is no standar of quality in this department, the worst example of this was watching the Blues Brothers movie with only the spanish track and even worse the audio was completely out of sync , almost 15 seconds and no matter how many times I tried , it always acted the same. I wont say that the dubbing on the films is subpar , it is mostly ok but to take all choices away is a bad thing , I dont know if the same happens on Netflix in the US or Canada.
The other bad part is that , yes there a huge selection of titles etc. but there is no complete catalogue to be seen either in the PS3 client nor in the Mexflix homepage ... I mean I understand that this works with the rating/recomendation system of the service but I would´ve liked the whole catalogue available in alfabetical order than rather in terms of genre and such. I dont know if this is the final UI , or that it is only the UI for the free month trial , I also don´t know if there is a difference to what Netflix does in this regards. The quality of the streaming is mostly medium to high , only rarely being in lower quality , usualy when a film loads up at the beginning , less than a minute, or when the net trafick spikes , but overall good quality. The other thing that Im not so sure about is the amount of content or how much content we share with Netflix , as I said earlier some content is from televisa´s programing and many of the movies were at one time aired on that network´s channels , but we also have newer films that Im sure that have never been aired there. Its mostly ok content , but for example we dont get the entire Star Treck series as in Netflix (I suppose it was to be expected).
So overall for the price they are asking it is ok , it could be soooooooo much better and I hope they improve the service through time and look foward to the day that we get the same content as in Netflix , well I can dream , it was not long ago that I wished for the service and now I have it ... it could happen again :D
Edit: corected some spelling mistakes , english is not my mother tongue :P ohh yeah I ate the whole package of proscuito ... I love that thing
