Hollywood has a tendency to go for safe, formulaic designs for most of their movie posters. Here are some of the more creative takes, whether they be foreign, fan-made, or simply alternate versions which the studios ditched in favor of a more conventional poster.
I'll try to refrain from making this a list composed exclusively of Mondo/Alamo Drafthouse posters. You can see the entire collection for yourself over at their site.
I love the Drive one! I'd have that framed.
That Robocop one is pretty great. Along with the Source Code and Scott Pilgrim one. Any idea if any of these are for sale anywhere.
@GreatestEver99: They sell the mondo/alamo ones on the website I linked above, but they print them in very limited runs and they sell like crazy, so you've got to be quick when they release something.
edit: Just found this. You can subscribe to their twitter to get updates on upcoming releases.
@Christina: Yeah, it's pretty fantastic. If you're genuinely interested in buying it, the first print run sold out pretty quickly, but if you follow him, I think he has said that they may do a second run.
@ashogo: Oh shit, what have you done!? I signed up to be notified for the second printing.
@Christina: haha, good luck getting ahold of it. That poster would look so sharp on any wall.
I like the fan-made Drive one, but I just can't bring myself to declare it better than the official one in any way. That was my favorite poster of 2011 (after only Captain America's vintage one). In fact, Drive probably had the best print marketing across the board for any 2011 movie.
I do like the top poster for Shame, where is that from? And of course, Alamo Drafthouse posters are always fantastic. Black Swan had pretty amazing print ads too. But I think of all the posters you've highlighted, I want that Dracula one on my wall the most. That thing is freaking gorgeous.
For some more suggestions, check out this French poster for Carnage (so much better than the American one) and this unofficial one for Super 8. And of course, there's always the exciting and bizarre world of spectacularly crazy surrealism that is the Polishmovie posterindustry.
@vonDread: your list is 404ing for me. The Shame one was posted on the forums a few days back, it was a full-page in some magazine or newspaper I assume.
There is so much craziness in foreign posters, especially those Polish ones, that I don't even really know where to start. I guess I'll just pick out a few good ones. This list is already a bit too Mondo dominated; I'd like to give it a little more variety.
@ashogo: Hmm... weird. It works for me.
