MOTY 2011

A film can't be just good to end up on my favourites of the year. It has to leave an impact.

1. Take Shelter

Is it about examining paranoid schizophrenia? Is it a human family drama? Is it about the end of the world? I've already discussed in another list why it's the best psychological thriller I've ever seen. Chilling minimalist score, gorgeous cinematography, excellent character development, top calibre acting and directing. Those last 10 minutes will have you on the edge of your seat, breathless, anxious, and then "FFFFFUUUUUUUU".

2. Melancholia

Probably the only film I know that deals with depression in all its aspects. This and Take Shelter make a great double-bill of mental disorders and impending apocalypses. Not only is it the most beautiful, jaw dropping film of this year, with the best opening sequence since 2001, but it also cleverly plotted with a climax that left me speechless in the cinema. Easily Lars von Trier's best film in a while.

3. Drive

I don't think I need to say anymore than what's already been said.

4. The Secret World of Arrietty

Studio Ghibli's best film since SPIRITED AWAY. Yes it's not original, it borrows from its source material, but damn do Studio Ghibli make this world of little fully realised with lots of imagination. The heartbreaking score, clever cinematography where it's shot from the little people's perspective, characters you fall in love with, and that goddamn bittersweet ending. I bawled my eyes out in the cinema. A grown man!

5. Midnight in Paris

Not only is this Woody Allen back to his MANHATTAN roots, it's just magical. That snappy, quotable dialogue and neurotic monologues you'd expect are in full effect here but coming from Luke Wilson in probably his most surprising performance to date. The cameos are tons of nerdgasm fun, the cinematography really is a love letter to Paris, and the critique of "golden age thinking" (nostalgia wanking, basically) is poignant. You ever hear a person say, "I'd love to go back to so and so time period" or "Back in the good old days", just slam this film in their face!

6. Attack the Block

Not only is this the best action film of the year, and also the most quotable, but it's also really daring with its choice of hooligan characters in this very modern take on an alien invasion flick. This is the modern GOONIES that you never knew you wanted. You'll laugh at whatever Pest says, cringe at the gruesome violence, bob your head to great music, and leap for joy for every action scene.

7. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

Straight up best comedy of 2011, the concept is so unique yet makes you think why no one else thought of it. Horror fans will eat this up. It's not just a parody, it's sweet, gruesome, and very darkly funny. There hasn't been a great horror-comedy since SHAUN OF THE DEAD until this film fell into my lap. Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk are a brilliant duo, I want to see a TV series with just Tucker and Dale. "Bring it, frat bitch!"

8. Super

The best vigilante movie ever, better than KICK-ASS, DEFENDOR, SPECIAL. Dark, funny, emotional, deep, this really came out nowhere from James Gunn (SLITHER). Supremely underrated, if you want a "superhero" movie to challenge you, this is it. "Shut up, Crime!" indeed.

9. The Tree of Life

While it's really messy, just the family drama and exploring childhood segments really hit close to home with the battling philosophies of grace vs nature embodied in your parents. As a person of faith (Muslim), the whole questioning God's actions of why bad things happen was poignant.

10. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Wait, an actually good Planet of the Apes film since Conquest...(1972)! Now we can finally forget that Tim Burton abomination. Watch this just for Caesar's (Andy Serkis) performance, and for that scene where he says a single iconic word. Everyone in the cinema gasped at that moment!
