General Discussion » Alien or Aliens?

Aliens was the first one I saw, so that colors my opinion a bit, but honestly aliens was so iconic as a scienpce fiction action movie, it just made the bigger impression on me. It is very hard to imagine space marines without thinking of that crew.

Friday Night Lights » Shooting Style

@circle: I'm a huge fan of that show, and (spoiler alert) it's not really about the football at all.

As far as the camera style, I seem to think it calms down a bit later on, but I have to admit it never bothered me. It's really worth sticking with that show, once they hit season three it gets very very good (season 2 is a bit dumb in parts).

Slumdog Millionaire » Does the Bollywood number at the end harm this movie?

Yeah I really didn't dig Slumdog at all... it did a fair job of telling that story, and it was a very pretty movie, but it just felt overwrought or something... I hate to bring external stuff into movies, but I really felt like Danny Boyle thought he was trying to "speak for the downtrodden people" or something.  Plus the story itself turns out to be kind of hokey.

Also, the story of the movie was a little too close to City of God, which is about a billion times better, and I couldn't help comparing the two.

General Discussion » Favorite "Found Footage" movie?

 @Rorie:

 I don't know if this will inspire rage or not, but I'm gonna go with Cloverfield.  By no means would I claim that it is an amazing movie, but considering these are all the kinds of movies that I would see once and then generally forget about, I think Cloverfield did a good job with atmosphere.  When I saw it in the theater, I liked the feeling that I was watching somebody who was on the ground while there was a giant blockbuster film going on in the city.

I've heard the effect of watching that movie at home is less than impressive, however.  I tend to think most of these movies work best in a dark theater.

I did like Blair Witch quite a bit when I saw it in the theater.

I think my absolute least favorite part about every movie in this "sub-genre" is when they feel it necessary to keep acknowledging the existence of the camera.  In most of these cases, the fact that the camera is running through all of these deadly scenes is pretty far-fetched anyway, and it just takes me out of the moment when people are yelling at each other to turn it off.

Also, the acting in these movies is often not great.
