Movies I've watched since Screened.com launched

I am totally stealing this idea from Matt Rorie. I will include any film I watch, be they first time viewings, ones I have watched a million times in the past, etc.

1. Bloodsport

13/5/10 Still the greatest Jeanne Claude Van Damme movie of all time. 'Kumite! Kumite'

2. Iron Man 2

15/5/10 Not as good as the first but still pretty entertaining, purely because Robert Downey Jnr as Tony Stark is awesome. Otherwise not a whole deal of good action sequences (the fight with Don Cheadle was lame) or really good plot. Still entertaining though

3. Avatar

23/5/10 Got the Blu-Ray, not the worlds most original or greatest movie, but it sure is pretty looking. Plus the army dude whose name escapes me is awesome. Reminds me of the Commando unit from the original Command and Conquer.

4. Robin Hood

29/5/10 Not as good as hoped for. I would have liked more archery, forestness, things you typically expect from a Robin Hood film. A competent movie however and Russ never disappoints.

5. Monsters, Inc.

30/5/10 Just watched it again, but first time ever on Blu Ray. Still a classic movie, one of my favourite Pixar films (though aren't they all). Phenomenal on Blu Ray though, graphics are great.

6. Hot Fuzz

1/6/10 While my girlfriend had to stay back late at work the other night due to Parent-Teacher interviews, I had a hankering to continue watching Midsomer Murders. However we are working through those DVDs together so in lieu of that, I decided to watch Hot Fuzz, which takes a 'Midsomer' setting and then changes it by being satirical, humourous and making sure that 'this shit just got real'. Great movie.

7. Invictus

3/6/10 Not a bad film, the rugby scenes are a bit cheesy and the attempt to make the All Blacks look like 'the enemy' and 'unbeatable' is poorly handled. However Freeman's portrayal of Mandela is well done and it is an interesting look at the post apartheid era of South African history.

8. Gran Torino

10/6/10 This is actually one of my favourite movies. Ever now that I think about it. It is so well directed and Eastwood's old man growl and glare and general attitude really makes this film. If this is the last film that Eastwood is ever in, then it is a wonderful send off. So awesome.

9. Sherlock Holmes

12/6/10 Wow, a month since I started this list already. I really don't get a lot of time to watch films either with work etc. Watched this on Blu-Ray yesterday again. Not the worlds greatest film nor Guy Ritchie's best but it certainly is a bit of fun. Robert Downey Jnr's revival continues to impress

10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

14/6/10 This movie is one of those 'go to movies' that is always watchable. Still a crack up and the best of the Apatow series of films (though Knocked Up is a close second). Jason Segel is hilarious in his role and there is actually a fair bit of substance to the film as well. A good time and a fun film.

11. To Kill a Mockingbird

18/6/10 I am teaching the novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and watching this film after the reading was a part of the unit so away we went. Gregory Peck is great as Atticus Finch, although fairly different to the Atticus of the book. I didn't remember that Robert Duvall pops in as Boo Radley at the end either. A lot of very wooden performances though as well (whoever played Mayella Ewell was terrible!). I don't put this on my 'classics' list but I can see why people do.

12. Pale Rider

19/6/10 First time I have ever seen this. Not my favourite western but pretty good, a different setting to a lot of them. Clint Eastwood is bad ass as always, although the female character 'love plots' annoyed me. I would also have liked to know the backstory between the Preacher and Marshal Stockton because they clearly had some beef with each other.

13. Knocked Up

20/6/10 Another good Apatow film, a bit more substance than others like Superbad and 40 year old version. Not as good and overly funny as Forgetting Sarah Marshall but still a really good film.

14. The Hurt Locker

25/6/10 First time I've seen this. Surprisingly good (I know it won the Oscar but so did Crash and Traffic and those were boring as batshit and just won because of their subject area. I thought this might be the same). An interesting look at the Iraq war. Fuck going to Iraq.

15. The A-Team

28/6/10 A weird but fun movie. Some of the directing seems to lack focus, the 'dramatic' scenes during their trial etc do not fit in with the rest of the film. This film is best when it is making fun of itself, B.A Baracus threatening to 'kill fools', I mean he has 'pity' and 'fool' tattooed onto his knuckles. What the hell was he doing in the desert at the beginning of that film anyway? A bit of silly fun

16. Zack and Miri Make a Porno

3/7/10 First time I've seen this. Better then I expected. The humour was crude (no surprise there) but it was surprisingly amusing. The Kenny Hotz cameo blew me away and the cast generally were pretty funny. Zack and Miri's 'awkwardness' was pretty lame though and that part of the plot (which tried for some seriousness) was terrible. Would have just been better being totally ridiculous.

17. Law Abiding Citizen

3/7/10 Wow this movie is violent, and not always justified. I normally like revenge driven stuff (The Count of Monte Cristo is my favourite book) but there was so little set up for this and a lack of character development. I want to watch Taken though as I have heard good things about it.

18. Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill

5/7/10 Something a bit lighthearted. Another first see for me (although I had seen excerpts previously). Eddie Izzard is a funny guy, really enjoyed this stand-up gig, a good variety of topics and really funny. Highly recommended.

19. Toy Story 3

11/7/10 Went to the movies tonight to see this. Reminded me of the fact that Toy Story movies are pretty cool. I think now this is my 2nd Pixar movie on this list and others are sure to follow as I watch them again. Pixar films are really successful at making movies that are great for kids and adults, something that Dreamworks doesn't quite pull off. I hope this is the last Toy Story film though because it ends it all pretty well.

20. Zombieland

16/7/11 Another first time seen. I really really like this movie. A movie I did not expect to like because I don't really like zombie movies (although I loved Shaun of the Dead). This movie had a great combo of indie esque humour (the rules are fucking amazing), the zombie deaths are pretty sweet and one of the greatest cameos I have ever seen in a film (Bill Murray non-zombie is the best). Watched again 9/10/11. WTF can't add it again! (P.S I'm drunk.) Watched it with my gf on Blu-ray,. She is scared of zombies but liked it. P.s Who the hell gave this list a negative vote?

21. The Eiger Sanction

16/7/10 Weird film, very much a product of its time. However as the movie continued I found myself getting into it a bit more and enjoying it. Clint Eastwood remains a bad ass.

22. Animal Kingdom

23/7/10 Just came back from the cinema having watched this. Breathtaking movie, one in which you feel you are involved in every step of the way. Go watch this film!

23. Inception

25/7/10 Pretty good although I feel it was a little bit over hyped. Not taking anything away from it though, it was a great film that I think most people should go and see.

24. Brick

31/7/10 Man JGL gets his arse kicked in this movie but also does some pretty sweet arse kicking himself. Way more film noir than I thought it would be but also a lot of bright settings as well. Interesting story though the high school element is missed a bit (though the bit with the Pin's mum is great)

25. V for Vendetta

31/7/10 This is still a top movie. Watching it again now there are aspects of is that are a little cheesy but overall it is a really well imagined look at totalitarian societies and the way to respond to them. I really like the world created in this film, there is a realistic back story to how the government took over that doesn't seem too far fetched.

26. Alby Mangels: World Safari 2

2/8/10 Had to add this movie to the site so I could write about it on here. Alby Mangels is my freaking hero. He travels the globe (in this mainly Australia, Papua New Guinea and South America), tackles animals, crocs, horses, boars, sharks and other crazy stuff, find opals etc. Along the way he macks so many different chicks it is incredible. People are delivering him new hot women all the time. He epitomises everything amazing about 1970s and 1980s Australia.

27. Parenthood

8/8/10 In light of the upcoming TV series (well for here anyway), the TV showed this movie. First time I've seen it, not too bad. 1980s Keanu Reeves is my favourite Keanu Reeves

28. Terminator Salvation

10/8/10 Not as bad as I thought it would be. Some good high action set pieces although the film lacked any real feel to it, even the action lacked suspense and intensity. Also no plot, character development etc. Still a bit of fun though.

29. Max Payne

14/8/10 Not 'terrible' but not good either. I have a few issues with this film. Firstly the action sequences are poorly shot for the most part. Secondly the plot and character development don't really exist, it is only through the games that I actually know some of the back story. Finally, my biggest issue is that there was a lot of noise pollution throughout the whole film, the sound was 'buzzing' the whole time which created a lot of dissonance for me. Either pouring rain, or office noises or anything, it was hard to concentrate.

30. The Hangover

21/8/10 Went to a party at a friends house, it turned into a bit of a movie evening with whatever movies they had that we all agreed on. The Hangover was the first one, this movie, when I first saw it exceeded my expectations. My girlfriend liked it watching it at this party and not many comedies of this kind get that approval. Good film

31. 10 Things I Hate about You

21/8/10 Same night, next movie. Watched this with my English Class that I teach a while ago too. Simply because it is an adaption of 'Taming of the Shrew'. Early Joseph Gordon-Levitt performance, back in his 3rd Rock days. A cutesy film, the music is mostly good. Some wooden acting particularly from some support characters.

32. Van Wilder

21/8/10 I forgot how terrible this movie actually was. Tara Reid cannot act her way out of a paper bag. It is much cruder than it needs to be and there is the worlds thinest plot. The only thing redeeming it is that Ryan Reynolds is so damn charismatic.

33. Blood Diamond

28/8/10 Africa is messed up. DiCaprio is a good actor. This is a pretty good movie.

34. The Shawshank Redemption

29/8/10 First time I have ever seen this. Really good movie. Didn't have the quasi-religious stuff that The Green Mile had and I like that fact

35. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

29/8/10 Will Ferrell is a funny man.

36. Remember the Titans

2/9/10 Watched this as part of a unit I am teaching. The students love this movie although it is all a bit too cliched for my liking. The soundtrack and music is integrated well throughout the film though.

37. Bruce Almighty

3/9/10 Another movie being watched as part of a unit being taught at school. An okay movie, not 'great' but solid throughout. My Jennifer Aniston crush continues. She can't act her way out of a paper bag, nor is she the most attractive person in Hollywood, but there is something about her that makes me think bad thoughts.

38. Thank You for Smoking

3/9/10 My favourite Reitman film. All of the characters (pretty much) are performed well and the dialogue is really clever. Any movie that can make you LIKE a tobacco lobbyist has done a good job.

39. The Specialist

4/9/10 Was on TV so I watched it. Not a whole lot of 'plot' but didn't really need it. Sharon Stone was pretty sexy in it, although some of the stuff she 'wears' is not believable at home attire. This is typified in the scene where Stallone is randomly working out (shirtless of course), listening to a message left by Stone, while we see images of her in her lycra? g-string get up, standing over an air vent Marilyn Munroe style.

40. Layer Cake

5/9/10 A really good English crime flick. Great ending, recommended viewing for those out there who haven't watched it.

41. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

9/9/10 Was on TV the other night. Not bad random humour. Neil Patrick Harris as Neil Patrick Harris was hilarious and a really good addition to the film.

42. Wanted

13/9/10 Surprisingly awesome, in a terrible kind of way. Obvious plot twists, pretty stodgy acting from McAvoy, cheesy set pieces and utterly ridiculous action. A lot of fun though.

43. Platoon

22/9/10 A great film. Charlie Sheen at his best. Good Vietnam war tension.

44. The Wackness

22/9/10 A movie passed onto me by recommendation. Really good, I would highly advise people to watch this film also. Good dynamic between the main actor and Ben Kingsley. I think Kingsley is actually really good in this film. Sweet soundtrack also.

45. Fight Club

29/9/10 Just finished reading the book so I figured I would watch the film again to compare and contrast. The film does a really good job of following the book and conveying the nihilistic message that is fundamental to the story. Obviously no 'wow' twist moment for me like the first time watching it. Really well acted considering the scenes are generally only ever between two people with a couple of exceptions.

46. Goodfellas

19/10/10 Long time since I have watched any movies (though I watched Zombieland a little over a week ago). That's what going back to work does to me I suppose. Goodfellas still holds up as a freaking amazing film. Shame Ray Liotta didn't do too much more of significance after this.

47. Alice in Wonderland

24/10/10 Watched on Blu-Ray at home. Have seen it before, I quite like it. Looks amazing on Blu-Ray. Also watched Hot Fuzz again today.

48. Centurion

4/11/10 First time watched. Not too bad, I like Fassbender in this film quite a bit. Too much CGI blood and over the top violence though (heads literally being cleaved in twain). Character development was lacking also. Exciting 'chase' movie though.

49. Kick-Ass

6/11/10 After watching this I don't quite understand the massive love that this movie got from so many people. Nick Cage was certainly awesome and the violence was pretty brutal. The comic segment was neat also, but this movie didn't feel all that deep or clever.

50. Salt

8/11/10 Russia is still a threat in 2010 apparently!! Stupid movie, a bit of fun though. Anything with Angelina Jolie using her undies to disable a camera has to be ok.

I thought Kick-Ass was one of the better movies of the year, a surprise as I wasn't expecting much.  Same director as Layer Cake, although I haven't seen that movie (but want to).

I think any of Nolan's movies nowadays are going to be over-hyped, so I try not to let that influence my opinion.

I liked Brick a lot, didn't completely understand the significance of the high school age gimmick, except when it was used to comedic effect like how you mentioned the Pin and his mom, and similarly when JGL is talking to his principal.  Seeing a seemingly nerdy JGL kick lots of ass in inventive ways was definitely a highlight.  Writer/director Rian Johnson's style is kind of showy though.  He's really clever but wants people to know this at all times.
