I'm hoping for a switch for the better but they are turning around the next one so quickly that I wonder if even a great director has time to get acclimated. That being said I think one Matthew Rorie's twitter suggestion of Kathryn Bigelow is a really good one.

I saw it today and I'm about three quarters of the way through the novel (go go bandwagon!). I agree with Rorie that a lot of the subtext, especially around the love-triangle is lost. Some of this is picked up by additional scenes involving the Gamemakers but its a little sloppy. This smells like studio accountant spin to avoid having to pay out the profits, similar to that Harry Potter situation. Either that or somebody needs to stop spending so much damn money on traditional advertising.

John Carter Pretty Much Bombs Domestically, Kinda Doesn't Overseas, and Other Super Important Box Office News.
I find it interesting that John Carter almost made exactly the same amount as Prince of Persia, Disney's last attempt at starting a big PG-13 blockbuster franchise. And just like Prince of Persia its doing better overseas. John Carter is a better movie than PoP.

Saw it at a matinee today. Went in expecting it to be decent considering the director's pedigree and ended up really enjoying it.If I was to compare it to Disney's last attempt at starting a big budget franchise, Prince of Persia, I would say this fairs a lot better. Wow those Muppets vs Smurfs numbers make me so depressed. The third chipmunks movie also did $331. Which translates to a lot of terrible parents out there.

I think Winnie the Pooh got murdered by Deathly Hallows Part 2, at least in Vancouver it was really hard to find a theater playing it as most theaters were desperately trying to find more screens for Harry Potter. If Deathly Hallows Part 2 wasn't such a good movie this would be reprehensible. So really you can just blame Disney for sending it out to die, at least it barely ...
