This past Friday and Saturday in Phoenix, AZ there occurred the "largest two day book sale in the nation", or at least that's what the local news anchor, who volunteered for the morning MC'ing shift, kept telling us over the PA system. I've been going to this sale for the past 3 or 4 years and it just gets bigger and bigger each time. There are about 600,000 used books for sale and it seems like every single person in line will murder you if you get in their way.
I've hear estimates from years past of 15k people going to this sale, but that's a gross over guesstimation, becasue a portion of the people that go are independent book store owners (and their employees) from all over the country and they buy huge numbers of books. And for good reason, the cheapest books are 0.60USD and the average price for a paperback is 1.50USD.
I'm telling you all this because... I went. From years of experience, you need to go on Saturday even if Sunday is 50% off day (all the good stuff is gone by then); and you need to get there early. How early? I arrived with my dad around 2:30am and counted ourselves as around the 60th in the queue. Now that may seem like really far back, but when all the camping chairs and folding tables and sleeping bags were taken back to their respective cars (you had to come with someone so you could hold each other's spots while you took turns throwing things in the car) we were in the first half of the first row in the snaked patterned ropes.
To give you an idea of the line, I found a video from a guy who showed up around 7am (the doors opened at 8am):
But the reason of this post was to show you all what I managed to pick up at the sale:
I got all of these for about 25USD all together. Unfortunately I didn't have a camcorder to record any of the sights that I saw, book resellers with PDAs hooked up to barcode scanners and the crowd collectively start to boo at 8:01am when the sale started at 8am and security would start to let people in the building/warehouse. I have a GoPro coming in the mail in the next couple of days for my birthday (or as my parents tell me: for my next three birthdays) so there will be more video oriented bog posts and I'll be sure to wear it to the sale.
This is what it was when we left around 10am (I started to record with my phone and kept it at hip height and walked by a portion of the line:
Other miscillaneous pictures I took but cannot remember why I did:
