After the last two days of movie awesome, I actually had to go to work today, so that meant worktime movietime! Ohh, wait a minute and hold that exclamation point because the movie I watched today was Fanboys. I've actually been interested in seeing this for a while now, despite it receiving pretty bad reviews.
Fanboys tells the story of four Star Wars lovin' friends played by
Christopher Marquette,
Sam Huntington,
Jay Baruchel, and
Dan Fogler. When it's found out that Linus (Marquette) has cancer and won't live to see the premiere of Star Wars: Episode 1, the quartet hatch a plan to travel to Skywalker Ranch and steal a rough cut of the film months before it hits theaters. God knows why. Throughout their travels wacky mishaps occur, as with any road trip comedy, and we get to see how "lol nerds" deal with these things.
Here's where it gets weird for me. It wasn't a good movie, but I didn't think it was a bad movie, either. Funny thing is, I don't really know why I didn't hate it. I probably should have, but I didn't. It wasn't funny, although it did have a good heart behind it. Maybe that's why. I dunno! The jokes, which mainly consisted of pretty horrible Star Wars humor and the frequent "LOL nerds in awkward situations" moments just fell flat. I don't think I actually laughed once, and it's not because I don't get them. I love Star Wars and totally got all the jokes. They just seemed kinda bleh. However, the jokes were delivered in such a way that you could tell the actors had a fun time saying them. I guess? Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself that I didn't hate this movie. But really, I didn't.
One thing I did like about Fanboys were the odd cameos. I really didn't expect to see
Danny Fucking Trejo pop up, but when he did it was probably my favorite part of the movie. I do think Fanboys relies on "LOL LOOK AT THIS GUY" cameos more than it should. It was interesting to go "oh hey look it's that guy" but it almost seemed like the movie relied on them a bit too much. I mean come on, you have
Seth Rogen show up three times as three different characters. Chill with that, really.
All in all, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't actually recommend Fanboys but I guess if you wanna watch it, I'm not gonna stop you? Oh, and if you wanna see Kristen Bell in the Leia Slave Outfit, just skip to the end. Just a little heads up from me to you.
