The issue from my birthday has Batman shitting himself and dying. Beat that.

And since it's probably a fake Batman, that leads me to a Dark Knight reference and I'M NOT WEARING HOCKEY PADS.

30 Minutes or Less

I was excited for this considering the people involved but it failed to live up to any sort of positive expectations. For the most part it's devoid of any meaningful laughs; if you've seen the trailers then you've seen all of the comedy this movie has to offer. It can still be entertaining at times but it never really builds on its premise in any meaningful way. The bank robbery could have been so much better if they spend more time on it, and the same applies for every other aspect of the narrative. If it had been more like Pineapple Express, going all out to offer some outlandish and humorous circumstances, it would have been much more enjoyable, but it seems contempt to stroll along at a middling pace, never extending itself beyond what is a fairly rote comedy. And talk about your abrupt endings. Disappointing. 2/5

Green Lantern

An entertaining enough superhero movie, but nothing particularly special. I thought Reynolds was fine in the role of the titular hero and the visual effects were very impressive but there wasn't really much to it. They cram in a lot of information and various sideplots but it never really seems to be building towards anything and the pacing disrupted any sort of tension. For all the information that's conveyed not a lot really happens and the scale of it seemed very small, despite all of the intergalactic traversal. Maybe it's because the action scenes were so short but I never thought it had the same sort of scale we've come to expect from big, summer blockbusters, even with the quality of the CGI and the massive budget. It was underwhelming but still entertaining for the most part; a middling attempt that you'll still have some fun with. 3/5

General Discussion » How have movies influenced your musical listening

I'm talking about licensed music in films. Has a film ever turned you onto a band, or a single song, that you've fallen in love with, even if it's not a genre of music you would normally listen to? If used correctly I think licensed music can be very effective in film and it's another outlet to discover new bands you wouldn't have otherwise.

A recent example of mine would be Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx's Nightcall from Drive:

Not normally a genre of music I would listen to but after seeing the movie I fell in love with it. I got the soundtrack and I can't stop listening to it; it fits so perfectly with the tone of the film and complemented the original soundtrack to a tee, listening to it just elicits an emotional resonance with the film and I think that's why I like it so much. In any other environment I probably wouldn't bat an eyelid, but that connection it has with a fantastic film is really effective. So what about you guys?

Off-Topic » What are you buying from the Steam Halloween sale?

I still wouldn't mind trying that Saw game, even though I know it probably won't be any good. However, with the amount of new games coming out I can't really spare any money on this stuff.

I do recommend Amnesia to everyone, though; that game is painfully scary, I can't even bear to play it any more, the feeling of dread is so suffocating. Dead Island is good for a few hours but eventually the same old fetch quests reduce it all to tedium, even if the combat remains satisfyingly brutal throughout.

General Discussion » Weekend Watching

Since I download a bunch of US shows I normally end up catching up on a few of them at the weekend. The rest is based around football (or soccer for most of you) with some NFL thrown in for good measure depending on what games are on. Normally watch some films as well, like this weekend I marathoned Batman Begins and The Dark Knight since Arkham City put me in a Batman mood.

The Expendables 2 » I'm glad to be wrong: Chuck Norris is in the movie.

So long as the action is as hilarious as the first movie I'm game.

I'd imagine he'll have a small role like Willis and Arnie did in the first, though judging from that picture it looks like he could be in the thick of it. Intrigued to see where they go with it all.

Netflix » Netflix is coming to the U.K. and Ireland.

Never bothered with LoveFilm since the streaming is awful. If Netflix over here has a comparable collection to the US, and we get it on 360 with all the HD goodness that entails, I'd definitely consider dishing out the money each month.

General Discussion » Fast and Furios is doing a Hobbit

EXCLUSIVE: Eager to move ahead with new installments of what's currently the studio's hottest series, Universal Pictures is considering shooting its sixth and seventh "Fast and Furious" movies back-to-back with a single story connecting the two films.

Screenwriter Chris Morgan, who wrote the last three films, is busy working on story ideas while director Justin Lin, who also worked on the last three "Fast" movies, is expected to return behind the cameras for both films, according to people familiar with the studio’s plans but not authorized to discuss them publicly.

Universal already has penciled in a May 24, 2013, release for “Fast and the Furious 6,” but the consecutive shooting schedule may result in a later launch, as Lin would be shooting the seventh film before he could edit the sixth. By making the two movies together, the seventh film could be in theaters sooner than the typical two-year gap between the Vin Diesel movies.

The idea of shooting multiple films has been tried (and has succeeded) before. Recent examples include “Back to the Future,” whose first and second sequels were filmed consecutively, as were the second and third “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. Peter Jackson shot all three “Lord of the Rings” films in one epic swoop, a pattern he is following with his two “Hobbit” films, due Dec. 14, 2012, and Dec. 13, 2013.

Paramount Pictures is also considering shooting the fourth and fifth "Transformer" movies together, according to a report in Variety.

Such combined production schedules can significantly reduce the combined cost of the two films and also minimize scheduling and staffing issues, as the lead cast and filmmakers essentially work on one longer production rather than coordinating their calendars to reassemble two separate times.

Universal's potential "Fast and the Furious" strategy would represent a risk for the studio, as it already would have invested hundreds of millions to make a seventh movie before knowing if the sixth was a hit.

The "Fast and Furious" franchise, which began in 2001, almost died with 2006's modest performer "Fast and the Furious 3" before revving back with 2009's fourth installment and this year's hit "Fast Five," which grossed $624 million worldwide.

A Universal spokeswoman declined to comment.

That's right, the Fast and Furious franchise is now so big that this epic story of fast cars, massive explosions, Vin Diesel's pecks and Paul Walker's wooden acting can only be told in two back-to-back movies! What a crazy world we live in.

EDIT: I derped the title if a mod wants to correct it, otherwise it might drive be insane.

Apparently Driver at one point wears a red cross on a white shirt. I don't remember it, either, but then I don't always have the best eye for detail.

I think this is what he's referring to. It's worded poorly, but I think the lawyer said that the driver "wearing" a red cross was a misquote, that he was framed by a red cross. But yeah, still bananas.

Does that mean he'd be Christian if he was playing chess?

The Hangover Part 2

The plot is essentially the same as the first: the guys get wasted, completely forget the night before and lose someone they have to get back before a wedding. Some scenes are almost exactly the same as the first movie bar a change in scenery, and it all plays out how you would expect. However, I still had a fairly good time with it. The writing isn't as strong as the first and it didn't have as many laughs, but it had just enough to keep me entertained and the chemistry between the three leads is just as fantastic as before. It's not the breakout hit its predecessor was but it's a competent enough comedy. 3/5
