I think the answer is simple. These aren't good actors, so they can't cross over to serious work, but their names will still draw in those demographics. Put Nathan Fillion in anything remotely sci fi, and the people will come, but don't dare put him in a drama.

I simply can't stop thinking about Drive. And the more I do, the more I think it's a parody of Hollywood action movies. Right down to the pink cursive font of the credits.
