Finaldasa's Favorite Film's from 2011

I went through every movie I saw this year and weeded them down to my top 11 (who does top ten anymore? pfft) and here they are!

1. Moneyball

This movie is pitch perfect. Making baseball and math exciting to most viewers is an accomplishment in itself. But to watch Pitt and Jonah Hill perform to more understated roles and yet steal the show with them is fantastic. Its not a perfect movie, not everyone will like it, but for 2011 there is no movie I would rather watch again than Moneyball.

2. Drive

Drive broke every rule and got sued because of it. A car chase is Ryan Gosling parked under an underpass watching a cop car roll by. Tension is Gosling listening to the Laker game broadcast on the radio waiting for two thieves to get done. Drive is a puzzle you watch be put together scene by scene with little to no grandiose muddying the waters around it.

3. The Muppets

The Muppets are nearly a dead franchise. They haven't been on TV in years, their movies are direct to DVD features, and beyond a few youtube memes nothing has been heard from Henson Studios for a long time. And then Jason Segel comes around and all the sudden we're talking about a rebirth. This movie was heartfelt, funny, and proves that movies don't always need to be super serious to be great.

4. Captain America: The First Avenger

2011's summer was filled to the brim with comic book movies and the thought of nerd's everywhere was which ones would be good and which would be bad. For me I couldn't have cared less for Captain America before this film. He was a super hero born out of WW2 and didn't seem to fit into today's typical hero. But after this film I was convinced not only in the Captain franchise, but in the possibilities of the Avengers franchise.

5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

The Planet of the Apes franchise has high peaks and really low valleys. So reinventing the franchise with a new movie is a daunting task, and yet Rise does just that. Avoiding the ridiculous notes that a "smart ape" movie easily pluck and coming out with exactly what you want. A little bit of emotion, plenty of apes kicking ass.

6. Super 8

Remember how movies felt as a kid? Ever wonder why they don't feel that way today? Thats because movies like Super 8 don't come out every year. Harken back to ET with a group of kids dealing with both life and aliens in a heartfelt sci-fi drama.

7. Conan O'Brien Can't Stop

Everyone of a certain age watches Conan. But what happened after the NBC "Tonight Show" debacle? Who is Conan really? Can't Stop provides you a look behind the curtain at who the man is and how he dealt with a betrayal by an entire company.

8. Contagion

Maybe not a film on everyone's list but it is on mine. Devoid of any great or pitch perfect performances and with plenty of moments of sap, this film feels like a dramatization of a real event. Watch as a group of people tangentially connected attempt to survive and cure a brand new disease.

9. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II

How do you end an entire film franchise? How do you make it so anyone can see the film and still enjoy themselves? You make this film. While not perfect to please every fan, everywhere, Deathly Hallows closes out the HP films with a darker and action-packed story giving us all what we wanted.

10. X-Men: First Class

After being fooled into seeing Wolverine I was very apprehensive walking into the theater for this one. I came out not 100% convinced but with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender heading the team the film broke out of typical action flick and touched one something better.

11. Limitless

Remember this film? Yes it came out in 2011, I swear. What appeared to be a "color by numbers" thriller turned out to be much more. Bradley Cooper gets this drug, makes him super smart, and now he has to deal with reality, not a mysterious entity hunting him down. Its smart, fun, and hits the notes most don't play. It isn't perfect, but deserves this spot.
