It's a(n american) serial convention: The good guys always win; they succeed by chance, luck and sometimes skill; the fight supervillains. MUBI showed it last year as part of their cooperation with the international film festival of rotterdam i think. Strange movie. It's about the conflict between Wallonia and Flanders, the belgian hormone mafia, homosexuality and masculinity and catholicism. And steaks. Bloody steaks.

Senses of Cinema has an extensive essay on Shyamalan titled A Preliminary Reportin its first issue of 2008. Author Lesley Brill depicts three key aspects of Shyamalan's work up to Lady in the Water: Faith, romanticism and the influence of Alfred Hitchcock. Good read if you have the time. Also intersting: Armond White accuses Shyamalan of racism in his review for Unbreakable.

Anthony Mann's fantastic T-Men depicts an actual case of two agents of the US Treasury Department trying to uncover a counterfeiting operation. It opens with an introduction by their real life supervisor. The voice-over commentary condenses the time-consuming agent work from weeks to seconds and makes room for tense action and interrogation scenes.I don't know if it's still in public domain or if someone snatched the rights.
