Crystal Skull lacks peril just as the first three Indy films did. It's a(n american) serial convention: The good guys always win; they succeed by chance, luck and sometimes skill; the fight supervillains. The Indy films follow these conventions and their own inner logic which isn't based in reality. Or better: It hightens reality, which allows for religous superpowers (Raiders), voodoism (Temple), immortality (Crusade) and aliens (Skull). I don't get ...

Sometimes a director gets incredible freedom to create their magnum opus. Sometimes they learn it's good to have some boundaries.

Depends. This is a good introduction to a more or less loop based approach:GusGus prefer twiddling knobs on their massive modular synths:Or you could do it (almost) acoustically:

MUBI showed it last year as part of their cooperation with the international film festival of rotterdam i think. Strange movie. It's about the conflict between Wallonia and Flanders, the belgian hormone mafia, homosexuality and masculinity and catholicism. And steaks. Bloody steaks.

The National Film Board of Canada, producer of Wild Life and Dimanche, finally utilizes their youtube account and started uploading all their content which previously could be accessed on nfb.ca via a not so great player. They put up the full versions of Wild Life and Dimanche:

Interesting subject. If you have too much time on your hand, you could watch Adam Curtis' excellent documentary The Century Of The Self about Sigmund Freud and his nephew Edward Bernays. The latter is the founding father of public relations, the art of crowd control."This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy." —Adam ...

Armond White talks with GreenCine Daily about Darjeeling Limited for 15 minutes. He is right imo. Also: Check out James Gray's The Yards and especially We Own the Night for great Mark Wahlberg performances.

Senses of Cinema has an extensive essay on Shyamalan titled A Preliminary Reportin its first issue of 2008. Author Lesley Brill depicts three key aspects of Shyamalan's work up to Lady in the Water: Faith, romanticism and the influence of Alfred Hitchcock. Good read if you have the time. Also intersting: Armond White accuses Shyamalan of racism in his review for Unbreakable.

And don't show her De Palma's Obsession, which is a great "remake"/hommage of/to Vertigo complete with an (orginal) score by Bernard Hermann.

I finally made the decision to not watch any dubbed movies in the cinema. So my list is quite sparse, but i enjoyed everyone of these very much: A Separation, Atmen by Karl Markovics, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Copie Conforme (or was this at the end of last year at a festival? Can't remember), Le quattro volte, Le nom des gens, Le Havre, Lola, Green Hornet, Super 8, Tape End ...

Anthony Mann's fantastic T-Men depicts an actual case of two agents of the US Treasury Department trying to uncover a counterfeiting operation. It opens with an introduction by their real life supervisor. The voice-over commentary condenses the time-consuming agent work from weeks to seconds and makes room for tense action and interrogation scenes.I don't know if it's still in public domain or if someone snatched the rights. The archive.org version ...
