Off-Topic » How do electronic bands perform live?

Depends. This is a good introduction to a more or less loop based approach:

GusGus prefer twiddling knobs on their massive modular synths:

Or you could do it (almost) acoustically:

General Discussion » What are some other Sidegrades candidates you'd like to see?

@Nadafinga said:

And if you want a three-way mind-f*ck:

The Matrix, Existenz, and The 13th Floor (all released in 1999)

And Dark City. 1999 also had The Ninth Gate and Eyes Wide Shut. Two occult, psychosexual approaches to the Y2K angst?

A sad sidegrade: The Thief and the Cobbler vs. Aladdin.

Very loosely but still related: 1990s episodic films set in Los Angeles: Pulp Fiction, Magnolia, Short Cuts, Grand Canyon.

Scenes from the Suburbs » Watch Spike Jonze's new short Scenes from the Suburbs for free

Sorry, didn't see this. Usually it's the other way round for region blocking. It's not that good anyway.

You can watch Jonze's newest on MUBI. You have to create an account but it's free. The film is available for two days only, today and tomorrow. Be quick.

The Tree of Life » The Tree of Life wins the Palme d'Or

Booing at festivals is usually a good sign. Filmsnobs aren't all that classy (or have good taste for that matter, Maiwenn? Srsly?). I hope the palm will lead to a wider distribution for The Tree.

Off-Topic » Looking for a scene where a character copies another's faces.

Something like this?

Altough it's not just copied facial expressions but the whole body. Thinking of it, it's not really copying but more like anticipating the other's movement.

Upcoming Movies » First trailer for Hong Sang-Soo's Cannes entry The Day He Arrives

I so want to see this. Hong won the Prize Un Certain Regard with HaHaHa last year. The Day He Arrives runs in the same category and also seems to be a film about film.

General Discussion » Martin Scorsese: best film

All of them. My fave at the moment is After Hours. I would post the trailer but it would spoil the awesome "odysseeic" ride.

General Discussion » Sidney Lumet has died

The Archive of American Television put a three hour intverview from 1999 with Lumet on youtube. Part 1 of 6:

Sidney Lumet was interviewed for three-hours in New York, NY. Mr. Lumet spoke of his work as an actor on the stage before he became a director in television.  He recalled his work on the television series Danger (1950-55), and You Are There (1953-57) both live dramatic shows of the time.  He discussed the use of blacklisted writers on these shows and how the material they wrote often reflected the era of McCarthyism. He also discussed other television dramatic anthology series he directed for including Omnibus, Goodyear Playhouse, The Alcoa Hour, Studio One , and Kraft Television Theatre.   He described his direction of the well-known television special The Sacco-Vanzetti Story and The Play of the Week: The Iceman Cometh both of which aired in 1960.  He spoke of his transition to a feature film director with 12 Angry Men in 1957 and his work on such other feature films as the Paddy Chayefskys satire, Network (1976).  The interview was conducted by Dr. Ralph Engleman on October 28, 1999.

General Discussion » Wanting to get into movies.

While i didn't like lists at first, i now think they are great tools for getting to know the unknown and to keep track of what you already know. Don't start with humongous Top 100s, 200s,... Keep it simple. Also: don't let age or language be a factor against something. Silents, old b/w and foreign films can be offputting at first, but it's worth the hassle. Some great lists:

The American Film Instute's 10 Top 10 list
"AFI's 10 Top 10 honors the ten greatest American films in ten classic film genres. Presented by the American Film Institute (AFI), the lists were unveiled on a television special broadcast by CBS on June 17, 2008."

The British Film Institute's 50 films you should see by the age of 14 (including a Top 10)
"The 50 films you should see by the age of 14 is a list created by the British Film Institute in 2005 in order to inspire parents and educators to take movies as seriously as books and other kinds of art. It was created by more than 70 experts including film producers, teachers, authors and critics who all made their own top ten."

I haven't nearly seen everything on these lists, but what i saw was great.

A general tip for using lists: Don't start from the top, start with what interests you most. Have fun.

General Discussion » Seeing EVERY Film An Actor Is In

One very good choice comes to mind:
John Cazale. I'd like to quote wiki: "During his six-year film career he appeared in five films, each of which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture: The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter." In 1978 Cazale, then 42 years old, died from lung cancer. His archived self, portraying Fredo, also appeared in The Godfather Part III.
I think the best film of this lot is The Deer Hunter. New Hollywood at its absolute best.

TV » 1st trailer for Mildred Pierce (miniseries) starring Kate Winslet

Coming this March. Miniseries in five parts. '"Remake" of the 1945 movie of the same name which brought Joan Crawford an Oscar for portraying the titular character. Looks good.

General Discussion » Iranian director Jafar Panahi sentenced to 6 years in jail

This is really sad. The story at MUBI. Altough the 6 years in jail are bad enough, the 20 year ban, that prevents him from working is the real tragedy. I hope for an international outcry similar to the one after Polanski's detention. This time it's even justified.

Makes me think of Kiorastomis Copie Conforme, when William Shimell's character (an author, giving a press conference in Italy) says: "I'm grateful for the amount of attention you are giving to my book. And frankly, I would have appreciated such a warm welcome back in England."

Upcoming Movies » First trailer for Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life

Around 1.33 you can see a hard hat on Penn's character's desk. I guess that his character is a geologist or something similar and that he is working on a project related to NASA. I hope the Fountain comparisons are only superficial. Aronofsky's movie is an overblown trainwreck. And it was not derailed by the budget cuts.
