General Discussion » Documentary Suggestions?

@vital: Seek out The Fog of War.

It's an Errol Morris documentary where he interviews former US secretary of defense Robert McNamara about some of the things he was a part of in the government, and his time as president of the World Bank.

It's an incredible insight into some of the things that happened behind the scenes of among other things WW2, Vietnam, the Cuban missile crisis and the Cold War in general.

TV » Loved Firefly... suggestions?

If space exploration is what you're after, I'd pick Star Trek over Battlestar. I haven't seen all the Star Trek series, but Next Generation, after the first season is very good. It's different in tone from Firefly, though. The universe is a bit more sanitized, it lacks the grit of Firefly, but it is quite good. Battlestar is more a mad dash for safety, at least in the beginning. It dips in quality in season 3, but finishes pretty strong.

Do you prefer a long continueous narrative, with a beginning, middle and end: Battlestar.
Do  you prefer stand-alone, themed episoded, TNG.

Off-Topic » Why I don't like sports. (cause why not post this here?)

@Cosmic_Sentinel:  That would be Bill Shankly. :)

I subscribe more to a quote from the late pope John Paul II.

"Out of all the un-important things in life, football is the most important."

Irréversible » Just saw this...anyone else seen it?

@Kraznor I'm really quite squeamish when it comes to these kinds of movies, and I had a really hard time gettting through it. You mentioned Martyrs, which I haven't worked up the courage to see yet, solely based on the experience of watching irreversible.

Off-Topic » Have you ever memorized anything?

I know the poem If by Rudyard Kipling by heart. When I was 10 I knew all the scores and goal scorers from the 64 matches of the 1990 FIFA world cup.

Off-Topic » Are you a pirate? (the downloading kind)

I have pirated (verb?) in the past, but not on a large scale, and not for many years. Since i started working, I have made a point of going back, and purchasing the things I did pilfer. Still not there yet, though. Nor until they release a DVD box with the entire X-Men Evolution series. :-P

General Discussion » Crazy localisation

So I was watching the Norwegian BluRay of The A-Team the other day, and I reach a scene in which the team are going through some kind of airport security/immigration place. As I wasn't really enjoying the film terribly, I was kind of drifting off, but as the scene progresses, I can't help but notice that the guy checking their passports is wearing a Norwegian policeman's uniform. A moment later, the scene is over and I, suddenly intrigued, have to go back and watch the scene again. Sure enough, he is definitely wearing a Norwegian uniform. I can also spot a Norwegian flag in the background.  This seemed odd to me, seeing as how, as far as I could tell, no mention of them going to Norway was ever made.

What I'm wondering is if this could possibly be some kind of localisation thing, and that for example on the dutch DVD, they are seen going through immigration in Holland, or on the french DVD they are going through it in France, and so on.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

Off-Topic » Can you Dance?

I can't dance, but I technically know how to dance the swing. Does that count in any way?

Oh, and I used to be a ballet dancer, many years ago. (Swear to God, true story.) :)

@StormtrooprDave:

According to Marshall in the directors commentary, it wasn't his intestines, but the bandages he wore.

Looks like intestines, though.

@organicalistic_:  Quite incredible how indestructible one considered oneself in those days. It's a rude awakening the day you realize you're not bulletproof.

Off-Topic » Playing Doctor

I lived on a quiet street with little traffic when I grew up, so my sister and I devised a game where we would walk over to the other sidewalk, and up the street as far as we dared. When a car came driving down the hill, we would have to run like crazy to get back to our house, effectively crossing the street right in front of the car. If you didn't make it back before the car, and it drove past before you could get back back across the street, you were "dead", an irony that was lost on me for many years.

It's a stone, cold miracle I'm alive today. :)

If I can't convince anyone I know that a movie I'm excited to see is worth seeing, I have no problem going to watch it myself.
