The Avengers » Screened Community's Plans for Avenger's Release

@obscurefan: I can help you out with that. Throw me a PM with what type of computer you have (PC or Mac), and editing software you use.

If anyone else has any video related questions, especially pertaining to the video features we used to do on Screened, feel free to contact me!

Here's a few of the Mondo Avengers posters they just revealed today. The Iron Man on here is the variant -- I kind of like this one better.

What do you guys think?

Off-Topic » SXSW 2012 - suggestions?

Next Wednesday I'll be heading out to Austin for SXSW, and staying for about a week. We're not covering the festival this year as Screened coverage, but I had a great time out there last year and wanted to bring my wife back and check out some movies and music just for fun. I'll probably write a few blog posts and post a few pictures or something.

Anywho, I haven't a good chance to really look over the schedule -- probably going to do that this weekend -- but I wanted to know if anybody has heard anything great about any specific movies or bands playing. Give me a good starting point for planning my schedule.

General Discussion » I am teaching film studies - help me corrupt America's youth!

Pixar shorts are always good to study with a class with open dialogue. They're always pretty good with interesting compositions, set design, framing, mis-en-scene kind of stuff, and also telling a story in a concise way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m7dcbIKvlw

Do some Goodfellas' for sequential filmmaking to contrast the 3-act stuff. Also, the editing and camera techniques in that film are fun to analyze, as well as the role of the narrator and perspective storytelling.

Evil Dead also if you want to veer into lower budget horror, and untraditional and horror camera techniques such as zooming, dolly-zoom etc, dutch-angle, etc.

This sounds like fun Andy, good luck with the class.

Shaky Cam » Dumbest Filming Concept

Like most filmmaking tools, it can often be used as a crutch. I don't want to say it's unnecessary, because it can be used with craft and purpose, but it's also something that's easily leaned on -- just like quick cutting action scenes, slo-mo, etc.

Saving Private Ryan's normandy scene was a good example -- and in the rest of that movie, mainly because there was a juxtaposition of calmness (with a static shots, or a stedicam) followed by immediate chaos that wartime survival could ignite.

I think, to some extent, it worked in Greengrass' Bourne movies because he was constantly on the run, and for the most part, it was a perspective movie, so it helped tell "Bourne's" story, and put you there with him. Where it failed was that, well, it was just used all over the place for the whole movie, even when Bourne was in total control.

So, yeah, I remember times where it worked, but its just too easy of a crutch to lean on.

@JoeyF: We could do the chat for weekday meetups. I need to delve into our system a little more, but I think there's also a way to set the chat to launch on a set time if you guys want Sunday.

Off-Topic » Proposal For A New Screening Room

You guys can set up and IRC channel to be open 24/7. I know IRC might be a little more esoteric to non-computer people, but it's relatively easy to set up once you get the fundamentals down.

There are a number of free client programs for both Mac and PC. I use Colloquy for Mac.

You guys should try that out, this sounds good!

@coldtea: He had a hiccup with Youtube today (ie, they deleted our channel). Just click on Streaming and Progressive and ignore the Youtube selection. It's still there on the older videos, and it still automatically defaults to Youtube. We'll try to get this fixed soon.

General Discussion » You know the Screened feature I really miss?

We have no plans as of now to bring that back as a regular feature, as it's a little tough with the current situation (Alex being in New York, and Rorie in SF). It might happen every now and then though, more as a "when it feels right" kind of thing.

But, I agree those features are fun.
