General Discussion » Bold words from Ryan Davis

@Rorie said:

"FWIW, Ebert said that Dark City was the best movie of the year it came out. Even went so far as to record a commentary track for it.

Too bad Alex Proyas hasn't really lived up to it since then. I, Robot, sheesh. "

As one of the nine people on this planet who thought Knowing was genius (two of the others are Roger Ebert and Whiskey Media's own Dave Snider) I disagree with this statement. Dark City clearly wins in my mind.

Mad Men started slow but hooked me bad, in way few shows have. Ended up buying all three seasons and consuming them in maybe a month. Missed the start of season 4 though so now I'm figuring out how the wonderful world of illegal downloading works. Don't tell anyone. And yeah, Breaking Bad is awesome. Good job there.

Glee » Am I the only one on Screened that love Glee?

Watched the first episode and I can confidently say I have no interest in where any of that is going.

General Discussion » What is your most hated film?

The Usual Suspects is up there, largely because everyone seems to think its brilliant. The ending negates everything that came before it, making it the least rewatchable film I can think of. Also, Gabriel Byrne is the most boring actor in the business and he is prominently featured here.

Wish my computer wasn't so terrible as it was pretty stuttery, but good stuff despite that.

Twist Ending » Worst twist ending?

"The Usual Suspects' twist basically ruins the film. "

This. And yet this film is held in such high regard by so many people. The movie straight up lies to you for two hours and then says "None of that actually happened!" and its a brilliant twist? Such a pointless movie.

EDIT: Has anyone bashing The Village seen it more than once? There is so much more to that movie than the twist.

" @Kraznor: Robert fucking Redford, that's why. Also computer science out of the early nineties is really funny to young(ish) people.  MY QUESTION: film noir seems to be every film nerd/amateur filmmaker's favorite genre. Or maybe it's just the ones I hang out with. Regardless, I want the Screened posse to lay out their favorite film noir movies that are NOT Casablanca, because everyone already knows that Casablanca is best. "

Yeah, I know, its also got Dan Aykroyd, Sidney Poitier and Ben Kingsley but its still a mediocre, forgettable film.

Screencast » Questions for 8/16 Podcast!

Why does Whiskey Media revere Sneakers so much? Watched it recently and I got to say, mediocre at best. I guess I'm asking for a bit of a "Defend Your Movie" on this one.

Alternate question. Are the sequels to The Substitute at all watchable? I ask, largely because the original seems to be easier to get bundled with the others and I don't hate Treat Williams, largely due to his involvement in Deep Rising.

Screencast » This Week's Behind the Screened Door coming Tuesday

Hmm, well, I guess it gives me an opportunity to ask a qustion this week. That is unfortunate though. Monday is Screened night, Tuesday is Bombcast night. That is the correct way of things.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World » So....movie or books?

I'll admit I only read the first book but I didn't like it at all. Found the movie much more enjoyable.

General Discussion » Scenes that MAKE a movie for you?

Boogie Nights. I like the rest of the film as well but whenever I watch it I am always in anticipation of the drug deal scene with Alfred Molina. Cinematic perfection right there.

General Discussion » What movie would you Defend?

Last years Knowing seems to get a lot of flack and that was one of my favorite movies from last year. That for starters, I'm sure there are more.

General Discussion » How do I convince my peers that Brick is good?

Never did get why everyone went bananas for this movie. "It's like Noir, but with kids!" That doesn't strike me as especially brilliant or creative. Decent movie, but certainly not the masterwork everyone heralds it as. Your family is fine, stop pestering them.

Nicolas Cage » What do you think was his best film ??

He was indeed most excellent in Kick Ass. Other extraordinary Nic Cage performances can be seen in Adaptation, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and, most of all, Vampire's Kiss. Check out the image gallery of that one to get a taste of what I mean.

Honorable Mention: The first fifteen minutes of Face-Off when he is Castor Troy and not merely in possession of Castor Troy's face.

General Discussion » Favorite Movie Chase Sceene

I'm going to say the last twenty minutes or so of Death Proof. Really enjoyable stuff. Also, just saw Ronin....I disagree. Part of that is just due to the film being kind of mediocre, meaning I did not care about the characters involved in the car chase, therefore making the chase less engaging. Well done from a stunt driving perspective, not great as far as filmmaking is concerned.

General Discussion » the last airbender is not a bad movie

I wouldn't say it was really good, but its certainly no where near as bad as everyone says it is. Saw it in a theater, paid full price and I'm fine with that. The effects were good, there were some cool creatures and fight scenes and the dialogue was at least corny enough to be amusing on some level (tee hee, earth bender).

The Last Airbender » This movie is actually half-decent

Ahhh, wait, before you flip out just listen. Remember The Forbidden Kingdom from 2008? That movie was incredibly stupid and cheesy, yet it managed a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes and was looked on somewhat favorably by some of the very same critics who are now bashing The Last Airbender.  I guess you can chalk some of that up to Jackie Chan and Jet Li apologists but that movie was just as bad as this one (in my opinion, far worse) and yet critics are trashing this movie to the absolute extreme. At the very least you got to give props to the visual effects. I saw it in 2D and this movie showcases ILM's talents in the best way. Really sharp stuff and some creative creature designs as well. Yeah, the acting is pretty bad, but at least its not Jet Li as the Monkey King. One of the most painful moments of 2008.

I'm not saying this movie is great, but it in no way deserves the amount of hatred its currently receiving. I suspect it all stems from the general resentment most critics seem to have for M. Night Shyamalan. Seems if a fairly talented director makes a big summer blockbuster critics declare open season on it.

But hey, what do people who have actually seen the film think? And to those that haven't, see it in 2D if you're going to at all, it was a somewhat entertaining experience and no where near one of the worst films I've seen this year.

Upcoming Movies » Mathew Rorie is wrong

I've kind of found myself disagreeing with a lot of Matt's opinions (Splice for example) but he is entitled to them. This movie in particular, however, looks rather loathsome and not something I'd enjoy. Smacks of You Don't Mess with the Zohan and I HATED that movie.
