General Discussion » Director Movie Club: Week 1 opinions

As noted in my post yesterday, I'm considering doing some kind of podcast related to the Director Movie Club. I've no idea what form it will eventually take, but for now I'll be putting together a solo show on Friday. It's essentially a pilot, and if there's enough interest or demand I'll continue with it and we'll see what we can put together.

If you remember back when the old podcast was going here, we'd have a thread where people would post questions/opinions to be discussed. If you've got some thoughts about either Who's That Knocking at My Door or Mean Streets, I'd love to field them here, and maybe I can integrate some of them into the podcast. Comment away!

Phillies fan. I can't wait for tomorrow. I'm worried about our lineup though. A lot of injuries.

I really feel bad about the Phillies. Looking forward at the future of that team... man. What happened? Juan Pierre? Ty Wigginton? Ryan Howard looks like he's toast. And now you guys got stuck with Papelbomb for five years.

We shouldn't forget about that rotation of course, but if you can't score runs...

That management needs to sort some stuff out. When the Yankees were trying to offload A.J. Burnett just before Spring, the reports were that a "mystery team" was in the running to pick him up. I joked around that the mystery team was the Phillies because that's precisely the sort of batshit, illogical, insane move they'd make. And I was just kidding around. Because why would you need Burnett with that rotation, right?

Wrong. Phillies wanted A.J. Burnett.

WHAT IS GOING ON IN THAT FRONT OFFICE?

@matthew_floratis: I just meant they suck in general. Not sure how'll they will do this year with a new GM, new manager, and a lot of key players gone.

I detest Bobby Valentine.

@matthew_floratis: I'll try to forgive that as a Rays fan. One thing we can agree on I bet, the Red Sox suck.

What happened to them? I remember that short window when Boston was actually good.

If it's any consolation, your Rays are a threat. I'm ready for the New York-Boston rivalry to shift into the New York-Tampa Bay rivalry. That would be much more relevant at this point.

I'm excited to see what Matt Moore does, though.

Edit: And I just realized we face off on Opening Day. Excite.

Young Andrew Eugene Pettitte has returned.
Young Andrew Eugene Pettitte has returned.

We've already won this season, so feel free to not watch.

And I say "we" because I literally am part of the team. Literally. Literally. Seriously though, my argument for using "we" when talking about the Yankees is that I've been a fan of the team for longer than all of the players have been on the team, and I spend too much money on Yankees-related things all year round.

General Discussion » Im going to cry.

Hey friendos. I just wanted to jump in real quick and thank you guys for being awesome. How long has Screened been around? Maybe close to two years, yes? I was with the community when the site launched, writing a ton of reviews (trying to wrestle user Adrenaline off the top of the leaderboard, I admit). And thanks to the awesome Matt Rorie I eventually got to write for the site. You guys are great. It felt really good being able to put stuff out there that people enjoyed, and I always appreciated your comments. :)

Matt Rorie is an absolute hero. I can’t thank him enough for this gig. Alex and my fellow freelancers were great too. I contributed a small amount compared to the enormous effort put in by Matt and Alex. They did amazing work here. It’s been an honor to play a small part in this thing.

I have no idea what will transpire here; regardless, it’s been fun. Thanks guys.

Live Free or Die Hard » Is the UK (Region B) Blu-Ray uncut?

The North American release of Live Free or Die Hard is the PG-13 theatrical release. There's little cursing, and the violence is toned down.

I'm wondering there are any UK users out there that have the Die Hard 4.0 Blu-Ray -- is it censored, or does it have all the cussing and the extra blood?

General Discussion » What's your favorite Miyazaki film?

I am shocked and chagrined, mortified and stupefied that Porco Rosso has not been mentioned thus far.

General Discussion » Jack Bauer vs Sayid Jarrah: Who will triumph?

The correct answer is Jack Bauer; Sayid isn't as inventive or as attuned or as skilled, and he carries too much emotional baggage to make clear cut decisions in the heat of the moment. Moreover, Sayid doesn't have rad one-liners like "Don't fight it!" (Because apparently saying "Don't fight it" whenever you're choking out a close friend makes it okay to be choking out a close friend.)

Perhaps a poll pitting Jack Bauer against Jason Bourne against John McClane against someone from the FBI (because we have CTU vs. CIA vs. NYPD) would be closer? There will be blood.

Re: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

I'm wondering what you two think about the chase sequence in this film. After viewing it yesterday again, and then skipping back to watch the entire chase sequence twice, I've arrived at the conclusion that it's the best chase sequence ever committed to film. The pursuers are this astonishing force: impossible to beat, unstoppable, this unfoilable group of hunters that just will not stop. They're this specter that haunts the group. And, in a great twist, they're always kept at arm's length: we never see them close up and we never see them talking amongst themselves. That's super directing. Thanks to you two, this second viewing of the film has seen it jet straight into my hall of fame.

(On the other hand, the film has a bizarrely mixed use of music. The score is sparse and the film is often silent, yet inexplicably Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head turns up out of nowhere. Maybe I missed something, because not only is it not raining, but it also has no relevance to what's going on apart from that fact that it's lighthearted. I almost expected a mariachi band to show, except not really. @Romination noted the lighthearted nature threw him off, and while I don't fully agree, for that particular sequence I do.)
