Before yesterday, I was one of the few people who had never seen a single thing Star Wars related. Not any of the movies, not the tv shows, not the christmas specials, nothing.

I decided it was about time to change that, and yesterday I borrowed the blu-ray copy from a friend and watched Episode IV: A New Hope for the first time.

Watching a Star Wars movie for the first in 2012 is really weird. I already know most of the famous lines from all the different places they are referenced. I already know the names of most of the characters. I already know the story beats. And yet, A New Hope was a pleasant experience!

I didn't go into this movie with high expectations, I was actually expecting to dislike it. However, by the end I thought that this was a film I should have seen a long time ago. I didn't love it, but I liked it much more than I expected I would.

Some of the lines felt a bit cheesy because of how many times I've heard them elsewhere, but I guess thats not the films fault. Overall I enjoyed the script and was surprised by how funny some of the lines were. (boring conversation anyways)

The CGI alterations that Lucas decided to add to the blu-ray edition were quite jarring, but didn't affect my overall experience of the film. Honestly I thought that the Star Wars fans make too big of a deal of them, although if I had seen the originals first then maybe my opinion would be different.

So all in all, a really good movie, even for a first-time viewer in 2012. I'll probably watch Empire Strikes Back pretty soon. Should I just stop after Return of the Jedi or are the prequels worth a watch? Also, should I watch the original theatrical versions of the rest or is the blu-ray just fine?
