General Discussion » My brief, largely inconsequential, and belated list of 2012 films

2012 Films I enjoyed:

  • The Grey.
  • Chronicle.
  • 21 Jump Street - A pleasant surprise and a source of new-found fondness for Tatum.
  • The Cabin in the Woods.
  • The Raid: Redemption.
  • Dredd - Well done, . And other people, I suppose.

Films that were merely 'okay':

  • Haywire.
  • Underworld: Awakening (eh, it's dumb fun and remains largely inoffensive)
  • Project X - Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.
  • The Hunger Games - Is an all-round 'solid' film weakened by some poorly shot action sequences. But, hey, have to stay within the boundaries of the rating.
  • Lawless.
  • Looper - In all honesty, the film is hindered by a seemingly bizarre change of pace and direction, an uninspired milieu, and more paradoxes than... something with many paradoxes.
  • The Innkeepers - Wait, what? A half-hearted crescendo superbly suits the anticlimactic finish. My main grievance lies with the pacing. It quite simply isn't comparable to the oddly polarizing The House of the Devil.
  • The Awakening - Rebecca Hall is real pretty. Dominic West is also awful pretty.

Films that I did not enjoy:

  • Coriolanus - I admittedly had high expectations, but this this film ended up more desiccated than the Great Sandy Desert. A really uncomfortable and generally stilted film.
  • The Woman in Black - The acme of tepid horror commonality.
  • Wanderlust - Insipid and crammed full with sentimentality.
  • Jeff, Who Lives at Home - I really wanted to enjoy the film, but it turned out to be a rather flagrantly factory-like, generic performance.
  • American Reunion - A rote and unimaginative experience.
  • Battleship - An experience akin to being continuously struck in the face while in a raucous dance club.
  • Men in Black 3 - Dull. Dull. Dull. Dull.
  • Ted - Seth McFarlane is still Seth McFarlane.
  • The Watch - A display of pleasant chemistry reminiscent of the initial Russian Roulette scene in The Deer Hunter.
  • Total Recall - Totally devoid of all the elements that made the original likeable: Charming characters, a tongue-in-cheek approach, and action sequences striving to personalise themselves (in the standard Schwarzenegger fashion). Yo, DON'T BE SO SERIOUS, FILM!
  • The Bourne Legacy - It just doesn't justify its own existence.
  • The Campaign - What a waste of a commercially successful, comedically experienced cast. Poor writing is an effective way to kill a film.
  • The Expendable 2 - This film is indeed more expendable.

Films that I acknowledge as having respectable merit but personally found wanting:

Again, I recognise that these films are of a high quality, but I personally felt were incomplete or misguided in some way.

  • The Avengers - Tonally displeasing.
  • Prometheus - A film diluted by too many threads and not enough questions, and swamped by a morass of characters that aren't worth a damn. Charlize Theron is real purdy, though.
  • The Dark Knight Rises - An unrewarding ending is hardly recompense for such a lengthy--and at times tedious--build-up. Also, Catwoman is simply non-essential and Bane is short-changed. Michael Caine is great, though.

Prometheus » Okay, people are saying questionable things about this.

Caveats and besmirchments aside, I'm still eagerly looking forward to viewing Prometheus on Tuesday.

Game of Thrones » Question about Pycelle

He's merely playing the game. The game of thrones. The pretence of frailty and senility dissuades possible suspicion and makes him seem more trustworthy and sympathetic; it's his greatest guise.

Game of Thrones » wow

It was certainly a fantastic and enthralling episode, and it was nice to see Bronn finally receiving his due, but I still would've preferred a longer run-time; the show still feels hamstrung by time restraints. Well, all I say is that the next season will be dour as hell, or the Frostfangs for that matter.

The Hunger Games » What is this movie Like?

@VioletEyedDragon: We'll have to agree to disagree, I feel.

Man of Steel » What do you guys & gals think of this one?

I've never been a fan of the Superman character, and I don't see that changing. I love being surprised, though.

The Hunger Games » What is this movie Like?

@VioletEyedDragon said:

It is an adventure/romance, but it is pretty dark. There is little humor. Also, be warned that the sequels will be EXTREMELY dark. But it is very high quality and exciting. Great acting too.

It is vital to mention that the romantic sub-plot is horribly presented, though. Much like the moralization in the Suzanne Collins' novel of the same name, it's handled in a rather ham-fisted and brutish manner--don't go into the film expecting subtlety or deftness; it's a blunt and straightforward film. It's a solid flick, but I would say that it's certainly over-rated.

Last Action Hero » Is this worth watching?

It's part of the essential Schwarzenegger collection. I can't say that I see why the film is always on the receiving end of so much castigation. It's leagues away from being an awful film.

General Discussion » The Worst Film You've Seen Recently (And Why)

I recently saw The Innkeepers, which while not a necessarily poor film in any regard, is still a paramount let-down after the magnificent House of the Devil.

Taken 2 » Really...?

Yeah, I wouldn't say that the plot was the strongest element of Taken anyway, so I can't see why a sequel would be an imponderable possibility.

Off-Topic » Thanking the UK for Karl Pilkington

Yeah, I'm also a big fan of the momentously hilarious trio. I've listened to just about all of their audio content, to date--including their XFM radio content. I'll attest to the fact that An Idiot Abroad is immensely enjoyable, and to some startlingly disturbing degree, relatable. Hell, I could mirthfully expatiate all day anent the comedic merits of the venerable, tripartite gang, but I get the feeling that most Internet-savvy people have a familiarity with the guys in question, and know whether or not they enjoy the man with the veritably orange-shaped head.

Oldboy » just finished watching it for the first time *SPOILERS maybe?*

I vehemently concur: Oldboy's ending is hot... I mean, fucked up. Totally bonkers.

How I Met Your Mother » Finally, HIMYM sets a goal

I've never been a fan of the show, unfortunately.

The Walking Dead » Sucks of poverty and laziness

Uhm, the fact that the writing is atrocious is the real impairment. But, I concur, the show does lack the sense of omnipresent perilousness that should accompany any decent zombie-imbued piece of fiction.

Iron Man 3 » Gandhi just might be the villain.

With the power of...SUPER RACISM! In all seriousness, I'm all for Ben Kingsley in anything.
