@Brewmaster_Andy said:@staceywi The Cabin review, for me, was nothing compared to the Dick Clark obituary. The biggest advise review-wise has already been given here - we need to hear the author's voice, and a copy+pasted review as the first review under the "new management" was a terrible, terrible idea. Someone like @litrock puts time into his reviews, clearly cares about film, and is doing it all for free. We don't ...

I'm glad to see that other people remember the original Stooges fondly as well. This movie looks bad, but I'd definitely urge people to check out the original stuff.

I've haven't seen Lolita, but it's a movie that's interested me because of the quality of the novel and the quality of the director.Your idea about 'bad adaptation, good movie' is really interesting to me. I guess that I mostly agree that it doesn't matter if the adaptation is bad, but there's something that bothers me about it. I think when you hang your hat on the tagline "How did ...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like it's less that his movies have gotten worse and more like his early audience has grown up. I loved Billy Madison as a kid and hold a certain nostalgia for that era of his movies, but there's a scene in that movie where Sandler tricks an old man into stomping out a flaming bag of shit. That's a great scene, ...

The best book adaptation I've ever seen would probably have to be Naked Lunch. I think Cronenberg did an amazing job of being both loyal and disloyal to the book. The movie has its own characters and plot, but it is referential and reverential to its source material. It doesn't diminish the necessity of the book, but rather plays with its themes and ideas in film form.I think the problem ...

I'll miss your articles and reviews around here, but I look forward to more stuff from you on Giant Bomb! You're a really great writer and I hope that you'll keep us aware of any movie-related freelancing you do! :D

Nicked commented on Rorie's article On The Road Gets A Trailer.
I've read a fair amount of Kerouac, but not On The Road. He relies a lot on sound and cadence in his writing, and I'm not sure that will translate into the film well, or at all. The trailer looks okay, but even as someone who really likes Kerouac, it doesn't seem like a particularly interesting movie. The narrator sounds kind of crummy to my ear, but that's just me. Kerouac ...

There are some things about Hitchcock movies that I don't care for, but I still like his movies. Nobody matches him for tone or content. His actors are sometimes over-elaborate, his sound-editing is much different than it is today, and there are sometimes plot problems (not plot holes, more like "It's totally unbelievable that these two characters are head-over-heels in love"). Overall, I don't find it hard to look past this ...

Ghost Dog Review: “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai” might just take the cake for the worst title a film has ever had. The poster art isn’t so great either: It depicts a tired-looking Forest Whitaker wearing a jacket with the hood up and standing glumly in some ephemeral blue mist. The tag-line on IMDb.com reads, “An African American mafia hit man who models himself after the samurai of old finds himself ...

This is an interesting take on those movies, but I don't think that identifying them as some all-encompassing modernist work adds any merit to their quality. They're a mishmash of regurgitated ideas; influence doesn't imply content. For example, how do we better understand the story and themes of the Oedipus mythos when it's intermingled with Buddhism, Dune, The Hidden Fortress, and any other literary, filmic, or mythological corollary?I don't think ...

I think this movie is broad enough to do well at the box office, but I still haven't understood what the hook is. This seems like Avatar without the allure of cool visuals or 3D: A populist film that critics will probably find to be "OK", but not special or interesting, and that audiences will really like. It has mass appeal written all over it. That doesn't mean it's bad, ...

Nicked commented on Rorie's video Trailer 3: John Carter.
It might partially be the volksgeist, but this still doesn't look all that interesting. Though I have to wonder what the reaction would be if this was Star Wars branded.

The MPAA can be really petty at times. Ratings should be a guide, not a restriction. That petition is kind of misleading where it says, "[n]o one under 17 will be allowed to see the movie", since interested, underage parties could go see it with an adult if it was R. The problem seems to be that it couldn't be shown in schools as R rated, though couldn't teachers send home ...

Wow! That scene was TOTALLY devoid of tension! I know it's out of context, but you expect that type of scene to be close call after close call. You supposed to think "uh oh, there's no way he's gonna get out of this one", not "uh oh, there's no way he's gonna get out of this one, oh wait he's just going to jump up in the air really high."

Nicked commented on Rorie's staff review Act Of Valor.
It seems like, by virtue of its content, this movie necessarily has a political message. The weird blend of reality and blockbuster cinema going on is kind of disgusting to me.

@NekuSakuraba: Well, shit. Sorry about that! Though that movie did come out thirteen years ago.

It's not feature length, but A Trip to the Moon is probably an important movie. Maybe Battleship Potemkin too. Also, I haven't seen The Artist, but if you're doing silent films at all that might be more engaging than Keaton/Chaplin stuff, assuming it comes out on DVD any time soon.Overall you can't go wrong with Kubrick, Hitchcock, or Kurosawa. Seven Samurai is absolutely one of the best films ever made, ...

The weight that any "spoilers" seem to carry is often really fucking dumb. I remember seeing "spoiler" tags everywhere when all that Dark Knight Rises stuff was being revealed. If seeing Bane's costume before you're sitting in a theater "spoils" that movie for you then you need to seriously reevaluate your life.People tend to overreact when they feel something has been "spoiled" for them. A good film doesn't have "spoilers". ...

To answer a few people: I care; insofar as it relates to the issue of an artist editing his work in an iterative fashion, especially a work that has been as culturally resonant as Star Wars.I don't like the perpetuation of the idea that re-editing a finished work is OK. (Just so I'm clear, a remake is not the same thing as re-editing a film.) By doing stuff like this ...
