1. Takashi Shimura
Takashi Shimura, aka The Bald Dude, has appeared in more awesome movies than I've had hot dinners. Not to mention his serious acting chops and grizzled visage. How do you not bother to remember this guy's name? |

2. Toshirō Mifune
The King of all Japanese actors and one of the greatest actors of any nation, Toshirô Mifune redefined what it was to be a Japanese man. Endlessly cool and totally badass, he remains one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. |

3. Hiroyuki Sanada
I haven't seen a lot of films with Hiroyuki in them, but when I do see him, I always recognize him. Him and his ponytail and his beard and his coolness carry with him where ever he goes these days. Also he's a seriously great actor, even getting an Oscar nom for Best Foreign Film with The Twilight Samurai. |

4. Ken Watanabe
Hard to believe I originally created this list without thinking of Watanabe. Easily the most internationally famous Japanese actor today, and one hell of an English speaker. He's done quite a few big Hollywood flicks, like Batman Begins, Last Samurai, and Inception. Quality work in all of them, too! |

5. Tatsuya Nakadai
I'm finally beginning to remember this guy's name when I see his face. He's done a number of great samurai flicks, like Yojimbo and Sword of Doom, which has colored my perception of him so much that I always think he's gonna play a bad guy. Nonetheless, great actor, who knows how to do "crazy" real good. |
