TV » TV Shows that lasted a long time but you wish lasted longer

Oh, I guess I wasn't thinking of it because it was a reality-type show, but Whose Line is it Anyways should go on forever.

TV » TV Shows that lasted a long time but you wish lasted longer

People talk all the time about how shows are stretched out past their expiration date, lasting longer than they should, and tarnishing the memory of earlier, great seasons. Be it the Simpsons, the Office, 30 Rock, or House, very few TV shows go on for more than 6 seasons without resolving their original arcs, and just spend the rest of their time treading old ground and jumping over sharks. The only shows people ever seem to complain about the cancellation of are those that only last a couple seasons (Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, Firefly, Pushing Daisies).

However, are there any shows you feel break this rule? Is there a TV show that lasted more than say, 100 episodes that you still wish you had more of?

The only examples I can think of are 24 and Seinfeld. While both ended not nearly as strong as they began (or in Seinfeld's case, the third season began), they were still fantastic shows with seemingly endless pools for episodes.

TV » When you should start or stop watching shows on Netflix Instant

The whole "skipping a season" concept is interesting to me. I don't regularly watch any show I haven't seen every single episode of, but some of my favorite shows have some very clear weak points (The first half of the first season of 30 Rock, the first season of Parks and Rec, the second season of Friday Night Lights, and while the first half of Community's first season is perfectly fine, it's nowhere near the bar of quality set by the rest of the show). Having recommended these shows to other people, I warn them of these slumps in series, but I wonder if it really changes one's perspective on the show and its characters, having not seen their earlier moments.

TV » What TV shows have you consciously given up on?

Heroes after the first two seasons, Chuck after the first four and a half, the Simpsons, House, 30 Rock (I stopped after the first few episodes of this season, but I'll probably pick it back up again some time), Psych, Castle and many more I just can't think of. I have a very hard time sticking with procedurals on a week-to-week basis, and the similarities from episode to episode make it impossible to marathon through the ones I've missed.

Community » NBC Still Hates Community Especially Dan Harmon

This is upsetting, especially after hearing some of the writers are leaving, too. Hopefully enough of the original writers will stay on (any word from Megan Ganz?) for it to maintain quality. Worst case scenario, it's just the original cast doing dumb stuff for 13 episode, which wouldn't be that bad.

General Discussion » Aaron Sorkin to write the Steve Jobs film

Good, Sorkin should write everything, and I'm excited to see his directorial style, too. Although I don't know if he'll make an "objective" movie, he'll undoubtedly make an entertaining one, and I'm totally willing to sacrifice some facts for the interest of the viewer.

As for who should play Steve Jobs, I'm not sure. You need someone nerdy, of course, but also someone likable and a good speaker. The only person I can think of is like, Zach Braff, but he's a little too goofy.

Good. I already have it, but now my friends and family will actually watch it. Such a good movie.

TV » Awake officially cancelled.

That's a bummer. I don't know how much longer the concept could've stood up, but it was a great, great show. Here's hoping the season finale gives some closure.

General Discussion » NBC makes a decision by making no decisions

If 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation were to end, I'd be totally fine with that. I like both shows, don't get me wrong (although I haven't been keeping up with 30 Rock this season), but these current seasons are good stopping points. I guess if NBC wanted to, they could keep Parks and Rec going for a few more years, but the basic formula and scope of the show will have to change a bit.

Community, on the other hand, needs another season. The show is meant to be all four years of college, and I doubt things will wrap up very nicely at the end of this season.

The Avengers » So what happens now?

That's actually a pretty good question. It's a given we'll see a Thor 2, and an Iron Man 3, but the rest of the characters are an unknown. Could we see another Incredible Hulk movie after the switch from Norton to Ruffalo? Could we see another Captain America after the Cap gets frozen in time? Could we maybe see a SHIELD movie focusing only on Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury?

The Amazing Spider-Man » 90 minutes????

Even though I actually find 90 minutes to be the runtime of most of my favorite films, it is a little odd for a Superhero movie. Oh well--runtime doesn't mean much, and, regardless of quality, I will see it for the Emma Stone.

Devon Aoki » Name a worse performance than Devon Aoki in 2 Fast 2 Furious.

For the people saying the various incarnations of Anakin, although I do agree that they are not the best actors by any sense of the word, there are literally no actors that could've done anything decent with the awful lines George Lucas fed them.

I'd probably support the notions against January Jones. I despise her in absolutely everything she touches.

Bruce Willis » Bruce Willis! What do you think of him?

His performance in Die Hard is easily the most likable lead in any action movie.

That being said, I can't say I care for much of his other work, especially his more recent stuff.

How I Met Your Mother » Finally, HIMYM sets a goal

Well, we knew that he had to meet the mother of his children sometime pretty soon, as his children are teenagers, and the narration takes place from 2030's viewpoint. That being said, it's great for the show to set a goal. Me and a friend were speculating and determined the show has two seasons left: one more involving Barney and Robin's relationship, with them finally getting married, and then one more after that wherein Ted meets his wife and their relationship is shown. We have also realized his wife is probably Barney's half-sister, who is said to be a college student during the time Ted would be teaching, and also would be at Barney's wedding. Of course, Barney could always end up marrying Quin, but that would still leave the next season to focus on Robin finding happiness (considering how dull Robin's character is, I would not look forward to the next season). It's very neat how things are finally falling into place, but I can't help but think another year of Ted being lonely will be kinda painful.

TV » What cancelled TV shows made you sad?

I guess I'm fine with how Arrested Development ended because it managed to finish its story. Yeah, I wish it could've gone longer, but as far as short-lived TV shows go, AD could've been a lot shorter.

Anyways, to answer the question Pushing Daisies, Lone Star, Freaks and Geeks, and Firefly really could've used more episodes.

General Discussion » The Weinstein Co. Just Did Something Really Despicable

Yeah, I agree with the MPAA on this one, too. If you make a movie that fits the standards of an R-rated movie, it gets rated R. There should be more differentiation between something like Bully and Drive Angry, sure, but that's more up to parents and movie theaters allowing kids to go see it than the MPAA. There are plenty of sites out there with a rundown of content in films so parents are able to tell the difference between the Bullies and the Drive Angries.

I guess my real problem with this whole thing is how damn pretentious the Weinstein company is being. They're acting like Bully is some society-changing movie that would've stopped bullying if it was rated PG-13. With this, I have many problems:

  • Kids normally don't go to movie theaters to watch documentaries, especially about a depressing subject like bullying. Maybe if it was about babies or tigers, but not about bullying.
  • The kids that would actually go see the movie are not the ones who really need to hear about how bad bullying is.
  • The kids that would actually go see the movie would probably have been raised by parents that would let them go see such a movie.

As for the school screening crap, while I'm not an expert on the subject, I'm pretty sure a school can show students whatever they want, so long as they allow the kid to step out of he/she is offended. Maybe a permission slip would be needed, but that would just get kids talking about the issue with their kids, which is also a good thing. All I know is that I've seen Rope, Rain Man, Glory, and a documentary about the making of The Matrix in school, and nothing bad came out of it.
