I hate this movie. It's melodramatic, poorly written and everything about it feels like the people behind simply settled for "eh, that will do". Literally cannot believe this counts as a bestie. I would gladly watch any of the Defending Your Movies or Half-Goods over this any day. I am actually stunned by how far this veers from the normal editorial stance of Screened. I guess there have to exceptions ...

No mention of Transformers or Michael Bay? Neither deserve to be seen or heard from again any time soon. At least not in combination. I'm also getting a bit fed up with the Tony Scott + Denzel Washington combo, even though Unstoppable was quite a lot of fun. And, as much as you guys love him, Nicholas Cage does not need to be in 6 (terrible) movies every year.

Day 20 - Irreversible (2002)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/http://www.screened.com/irreversible/16-184515/This is literally the most horrific movie I will feature on this list. If you are ever in doubt that watching too many horror movies has desensitised you, I recommend watching this film. Irreversible is one of those films that I am glad I watched, but do not have a desire to ever watch again. It is a movie that stays with you for a long ...

Day 19 - Ravenous (1999)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129332/http://www.screened.com/ravenous/16-183895/Ravenous is a rare treat (pardon the pun) in the horror genre: it is pitch black horror comedy of sorts, set in the mid 19th century in an isolated fort in the Sierra Nevada's about two men and the strange appetite that draws them to each other. It represents cannibalism as the idea of the Wendigo. When a man eats another man's flesh, he steals his ...

Day 18 - April Fool's Day (1986)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090655/http://www.screened.com/april-fools-day/16-174326/This is a weird one. An 80's slasher movie that is presented as a murder mystery, heavily influenced by Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. The setup is straightforward enough: a group of college students have been invited to a friend's mansion to spend a weekend partying it up. The person who invited them, Muffy St. John, is known for her love of ...

Day 17 - The Haunting (1963)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057129/http://www.screened.com/the-haunting/16-173970/To escape 1999 for a moment while still keeping with the haunted house theme, this is the original ghost movie that was remade in 1999. And The Haunting is definitely a ghost movie in the traditional sense: heavy handed, hammy and still delightfully scary. The film begins with a line talking about 'an evil old house…; and it goes as you would expect from there. There ...

Day 16 - Stir of Echoes (1999)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164181/http://www.screened.com/stir-of-echoes/16-182978/Another ghost story for 1999. Not sure what the zeitgeist of the time was that inspired so many of these films to be made in the years leading up to their release in 1999. This particular one is an effective scary movie with a mystery at the centre of it. I prefer it over The Sixth Sense and feel it was unfairly overshadowed by ...

Day 15 - House on Haunter Hill (1999)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185371/http://www.screened.com/house-on-haunted-hill/16-93064/Mental health professionals get a pretty bad reputation in horror movies. If they aren't incompetent and oddly superstitious, like Dr. Loomis, they are completely insane and just like torturing their patients, like House on Haunted Hill's Dr. Vannacutt. Regardless, it does not reflect well on the profession…The poor reputation of psychiatric care is somewhat incidental to this film anyway as this film is ...

Day 14 - Splinter (2008)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1031280/http://www.screened.com/splinter/16-193643/Splinter is an indie horror film that provides some surprises and a fresh perspective on an old idea. There is a reason a lot of film makers get their start working on horror movies: a small cast in a single location only adds claustrophobia and further horror instead of taking away from it. Splinter is no exception: a couple on the run from the law kidnap ...

Day 13 - Thirst (2009)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0762073/http://www.screened.com/thirst/16-185513/A modern vampire movie that gets what makes (or made, at least) them such interesting creatures: blood, sex and religion. The three cornerstones of most of human history. In this case, the main character is a priest who, in a selfless pursuit to help others gets infected with an incurable disease as a part of important medical research, only to be cured by being (accidentally and ...

Day 12 – El espinazo del Diablo (The Devil's Backbone) (2001)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256009/http://www.screened.com/the-devils-backbone/16-185690/I felt like rounding off the last two Spanish films with a final Spanish-language entry to the list with El espinazo del diablo (The Devil’s Backbone). The end of the last millennium and the start of the new one was a good time for ghost stories. The Sixth sense made them cool again but the two strongest films in this ...

Day 11Los cronocrimenes (Timecrimes) (2007)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480669/http://www.screened.com/timecrimes/16-185768/Los cronocrimenes is another Spanish debut movie: this time by Nacho Vigalondo who, based on this feature and some of his other short films, I am hoping for great things in the future. The title of the film initially feels like a spoiler, but as the time travel element is introduced within the first 25 minutes and the real delight of the film is how it plays ...

Day 10Tesis (1994)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117883/http://www.screened.com/thesis/16-183391/Though perhaps more of a thriller than a horror movie, Tesis does belong on this list as it talks about, if somewhat superficially, about why people watch horror movies and what violence means when it's on screen. How I describe Tesis to people is 'Spanish 8mm' even though it predates 8mm by several years. It deals with the same darker underbelly of film making: snuff films. In this ...

Day 9Creep (2004)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381966/http://www.screened.com/creep/16-198843/Christopher Smith is a relatively new name in British horror that I have an extreme fondness for even though he has not quite made that leap to be a household name. He is responsible for two of my favourite horror movies of the past decade: Creep (which I will talk about here) and Triangle (which is likely to get featured at some point during this 31 day experiment). ...

Day 8Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace (2004)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397150/http://www.screened.com/garth-marenghis-darkplace/17-7043/Greetings traveler. I'm Garth Marenghi, horror writer. Most of you will probably know me already from my extensive canon of chillers, including Afterbirth, in which a mutated placenta attacks Bristol. Back in the 1980s, I wrote, directed and starred in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, a television program so radical, so risky, so dangerous, so goddamn crazy, that the so-called powers that be became too scared to show ...

Day 7The House of the Devil (2009)http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172994/http://www.screened.com/the-house-of-the-devil/16-186173/The House of the Devil is basically a masterful experiment in tension. Everything about it designed with that single purpose in mind and the film executes it flawlessly, even if the eventual finale fails to properly satisfy. The film starts off with a pre-credit title sequence which outlines some nonsense about Satanic cults and how this is all based on a true story. It's not ...
