Consider Phlebas by Iain M Banks is my favourite sci-fi novel. If you choose to go for it I recommend that you also pick up it's more personal (and much stranger) companion piece and sort-of sequel Look To Windward. Avoid spoilers on Look To Windward.

General Discussion » Most brutally violent movie you've ever seen?

Apocalypto is filled with interesting violence but it is the jaguar attack I find most difficult to watch, brief as it is.  A mans face isn't ment to stretch like that.
