General Discussion » The unpopular opinions thread

Ricky Gervais isn't very funny and the best of the US office is better than the best of the UK office.

Inception would have been way better if they didn't have any of the terrible action scenes bar the spinning hallway. The action was terrible, the worst of shaky cam tripe and Nolan should have gotten some one else to do the action.

On the topic of action, Micheal Bay is a excellent director of action but everything else he does is usually terrible.

Shia LaBeouf is a pretty good actor and I find peoples complaints against him to be fairly petty.

General Discussion » never seen any Star Trek:TNG but want to start

Yeah, watch he pilot and then skip ahead to series 3 and maybe watch The Measure of Man in series 1 or 2. Anywhere after series 1 or 2 is good although personally I don't like holodeck episodes.

General Discussion » Who's really qualified to judge bad movie accents?

I am Irish and most Irish accents in films are terrible and nearly every county has a separate accent anyway. It's always annoying to see a Richard Gere in The Jackal accent make an appearance in a film because that is the single worst Irish accent ever. Apart for maybe seeing Sean Connery in The Untouchables or Billy Connelly in The Last Samurai. The thing is when Rorie did the Bestie for Ronin he said the Irish accents were bad, where as in my own opinion they were actually fairly decent Northern Irish accents which only fell down with certain words.

TV » Favorite TV Sci-Fi Franchise?

I picked Star Trek although I really liked Stargate too. I would love to know why you think the quality decreased with DS9. Voyager I can understand but DS9 was really good.

General Discussion » What is your favorite quote from a movie?

"You gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?" - The Outlaw Josey Wales

"Reckon I'm right popular. You a bounty hunter?"

"A man's got to do something for a living these days."

"Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy"

- The Outlaw Josey Wales

"Kansas was all golden and smelled like sunshine."

"Yeah, well, I always heard there were three kinds of suns in Kansas, sunshine, sunflowers, and sons-of-bitches."

-The Outlaw Josey Wales.

One my favorite films ever and it has so many great lines all perfectly delivered by Clint Eastwood. Easy one of the best westerns ever made.

If someone is being a dick to you don't bother responding and just ignore them, that's usually the way I deal with the internet.

Star Trek: Voyager » Gary Whitta wrote a voyager script about the origin of the borg

It seems ok but I never really felt like the borg needed a really defined beginning. The only thing about this and a thing that doesn't make any sense anyway is why did no one ever ask Seven where the borg came from? She seems to know everything else about the borg and the Collective is a single being so they would have access to all of there data so did to one think to ask?

Also Gary and the Tested podcast are great.

Sherlock » The Reichenbach Fall: A spoiler-rich discussion

What with all the odd shots of the fall and Watson getting tripped up the best explanation is just that Mycroft helped him fake it or he survived and wanted to stay dead like in the books. The more important thing about his death is how it's handled in the next season. If they just have it all return to normal right away then it will be incredibly dumb. Thought it was pretty great season but fuck me the ending to the first episode of the season was some Doctor Who ass shit and a really disappointing ending. The second episode was really predictable but still pretty good though.

Still I am happy they are making a new season.

TV » What cancelled TV shows made you sad?

Reaper getting cancelled was such a disappointment because Ray Wise was amazingly good as the devil, prefect even. The show itself was also really good and quite funny. I was annoyed Stargate Universe got cancelled right as it was getting good with its overall story and because it ended on a really interesting cliffhanger. I wish it came back for even one more season. Babylon 5 getting cancelled in season 4 was awful because they then crammed in as many plot resolutions in to the second half of the season only to get renewed on a different station leaving a bunch of filler plots to pad out a really boring fifth season, it sort of ruins a really excellent show. Space Above and Beyond getting cancelled was also really disappointing again because of the absolutely massive cliffhanger although you could also leave the show there and it kinda almost works. And lastly since I am talking pretty much about sci-fi shows Farscape getting cancelled was a bummer.

Off-Topic » In other Whiskey News: AV Club rags on Bombcast's best features.

They weren't ragging on the podcast they were just letting people know what it is like and that it is something a little different from the typical gaming podcast like the Hotspot. People here are seriously overreacting. The idea is to let more people know about podcasts that they would not normally know about. They give a good description to a new listener of what the Giantbomb cast is like, which is long and tangent filled. Did most of you actually read what they wrote? They don't say it does anything right nor do they say that it falters they just give a pretty accurate description of the podcast.

General Discussion » What classic films have you never seen?

Casablanca and Citizen Kane are big ones and a ton of Hitchcock films. The Hitchcock ones I plan on buying and watching someday but that day is probably a long way off. Stuff like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and a lot of the gritty movies of the 70's and such. I feel like I am really missing out on movies from that time.

Black Mirror » This was my favourite thing on TV of the year.

I watched most of the first episode and didn't much care for it. Maybe it's because it was the same stuff Charlie Brooker is always going on about like the media and Cameron/government. I didn't see the second episode but from what I read it is Brooker again going on about X Factor and reality TV shows. I haven't seen that episode and there is nothing wrong with the subject matter it's just that it feels really predictable coming from Brooker at this stage. Brookers been going on about the media and reality TV for years in numerous shows and articles and it's probably just me being a bit tired of what he has to say on the matter.

The last episode however was great from start to finish. An interesting premise with a tight plot which was well acted. I was extremely impressed by what they did in just one hour. Perhaps a case of best for last but I hope if they do make more then it will be more like the last one and less like the first two.

Off-Topic » So, what are you up to in Skyrim?

Just did the main thieves guild quest line and started the side jobs which are kinda neat. Stealth seems really over powered though, you can walk up to people and by them and they won't notice. Using a bow or even better the throw voice shout you can get in any where and steal every thing.

James Bond » Favorite James Bond Actor?

I like them all, but I'll just pick Brosnan here because why the hell not. My least favorite would be either Craig or Dalton, neither did the suave side of James Bond very well.

Terra Nova » Stargate Universe all over again

I haven't seen Terra Nova but Universe corrected that mistake mostly for the second season. Maybe Terra Nova will do the same?
