spring breakers : Spring Breakers is my favorite project that Harmony Korine has taken on in his career so far. While I’ve loved his work thus far idealistically, or of what I’ve already seen, this film seems like an incredibly well executed experiment with an actual sort of point to its mindlessness, or exact opposite of such. Sure, he’s always had something to say with the crazy things that he makes and depicts, ...

The Bitter Buddha: Mini ReviewThe Bitter Buddha is a well-constructed documentary that follows a subject that is fascinating enough to drive it home even on his own. Eddie Pepitone is a man with a lot to say, and a lot of energy to say them with. A lot of people associate him with being a very angry, spirited guy, and though I agree with the spirit, I feel that this documentary offers an ...

Jack the Giant Slayer: I suppose my favorite thing about my viewing experience of Jack The Giant Slayer is that I saw it at the Metreon in San Francisco, CA. They apparently have the largest IMAX theater in the country, and goddamn does it live up to that, and not disappoint. Plus, 3D glasses are getting bigger, which is good for us glasses wearers. I always say they should just make 3D visors that ...

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III: I got to see a screening of Roman Coppola’s new film: a screening that differed from my first viewing experience in several ways, though mostly for the better. For starters, it was in a theater, which allowed me to view the film without distractions, which definitely paid off in the film’s favor. As well, Roman Coppola himself was there, and gave a nice, intimate Q&A with our tiny, but interested ...

Successful Alcoholics: I was pleasantly surprised by this short film’s dark, honest edge. It started out somewhat funny, but it then appropriately tackled the heft and seriousness of the protagonists’ addictions, and the negative impact it has on their relationship. In seeing their lives somewhat spiral when they lack liquor and are left to their own truthful devices, it’s quite sad, and doesn’t sugar-coat any of it, maybe with the exception of ...

The Last Stand: Mini-Review!The Last Stand is far from a perfect film, especially from a storytelling standpoint. There are various threads being dealt with here and there throughout such a concise timeline, and the pacing of these different occurrences can be a bit skittish. What does impress, though, is the hectic and overall goofy nature of the film’s tone and method of attack. Director Kim Ji-Woon makes a relentlessly enjoyable and outlandish action ...

Gangster Squad: Rueben Fleischer is a talented, capable director, especially when it comes to visuals. When looking deeper at his films, you’re going to find that they’re fairly shallow in context, but nevertheless, have a great amount of fun in them. Here we find Gangster Squad, a pretty looking violent romp that is nothing more than a good time at the movies. It’s a broad, somewhat goofy film with nothing crucial at ...

These are my favorite movies- one's that have impacted me hard or that I have just flat-out loved/enjoyed for any particular reason. Like food. Actually no, I loved the food in several movies that aren't here.

Dark Horse: Dark Horse is a brutal film without violence and with only partial bouts of aggression. It covers a dark slice of life through an uncomfortably funny yet truthfully delusional lens. Through director Todd Solondz’s observational, silent, and partially ironic approach to capturing this story, we get to focus on the performances, and deliverance of some well developed, tragic characters. Leading the film is Jordan Gelber as Abe, a man-child who ...

Indie Game: The Movie(Here’s my Review!) This documentary highlights everything I love about being an artist and about loving art in general. Indie Game: The Movie treats lightly but truthfully the world of video games from all ends, be it the fans on forums or the developers in bedrooms and big offices. It’s a perfect portrait of this constantly booming scene of different kinds of people that are ultimately just ...

Wreck-It RalphVideo Games mean a lot to me. They’re an important part of my life that I hold near and dear to my heart. To see it so well captured and treated in Wreck-It Ralph, I was absolutely pleased as punch, especially considering how it exceeded all my expectations generally as a movie. It’s got a lot of sweetness and heart to it, with an interesting character based tale on ...

Tim and Eric’s Billion-Dollar Movie(Here’s my Review!) Comedy movies really work well when the director and everyone on the crew are as funny as the people on camera or the script they’re working with. With comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim directing this thing as they do for all their projects, expectations are easily met within the absolute insanity that is the filmmaking behind Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie. ...

Les Miserables: I’m not a musical guy. I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard that, but it’s true. I see the appeal, but can never really get into it. I always feel like there is a lack of genuineness that comes with the style, as if it’s all about pandering and lacking in subtlety. Tom Hooper’s take on Les Miserables has me second-guessing that opinion, because if this is what ...

So! This is a list of my favorite movies I've seen this year. It's a big one, so it generally covers movies I just genuinely enjoyed with little to few issues. I'll still be adjusting and adding it as we approach the end of the year, but as well, I'll be adding blurbs for each of the films.

Oblivion was a fun and interesting action movie. Well shot and well acted. Unfortunatley the story can be predictable, but overall a very solid movie. FOUR out of FIVE.
