Best Films I've Never Seen Before 2011 of 2011

Not all movies I watch are new. In fact, most of them aren't. So here's a quick list of 5 I consider to be pretty damn awesome but never saw before 2011.

1. Groundhog Day

This is an incredible film. It's about a guy who is literally trapped reliving the same day and coping with that fact in various ways, but it's more complex than that. At its heart it's about being stuck in a rut, as this quote from the film captures extremely well: "What would you do if you were stuck in one place, and everyday was exactly the same, and nothing you did mattered?" It's an incredibly thoughtful, incredibly effecting, and also incredibly funny film that I think is one of the best films I have ever seen and an easy winner for this list.

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark

How did I get this far in life without seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark? I don't know, but damn, is Raiders of the Lost Ark a fine ass movie. It's well defined in just about every respect. I also really enjoyed its sequels, however for the sake of having a list with more different movies in it, only this one is listed here.

3. Crank

It's a simple action movie, but one executed so staggeringly well it's hard to question why it deserves a spot on this list. It's just really engaging from start to finish and has some amazing scenes such as the unforgettable sex scene.

4. RoboCop

I really don't want to explain why I enjoyed RoboCop. It's just a really well done film that's great at making you sympathize with the good guys and hate the bad guys. It doesn't hurt that it's also got some really funny bits in it that keeps it an engaging movie throughout.

5. Total Recall

There's a lot that's real mnemonic parts of Total Recall, sure, but the part that gets me is the throw away line of "Blue sky on Mars, that's a new one" that clearly is referring to the ending, lending so much credence to the theory that the whole movie is all a dream, which it totally is. Besides being an awesome adventure even without that element that little aspect of the movie sticks with me. It's great!
