Great Unscripted Scenes/Moments

Scenes that were improvised by the actor/actress.

1. Full Metal Jacket

Former drill sergeant R. Lee Ermey he was completely unscripted in his first, most memorable, scene in the movie.

2. The Shining

"Here's Johnny" was improvised by Jack Nicholson.

3. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Looking for a line to respond to Princess Leia's line "I love you," Harrison Ford improvised "I know".

4. Taxi Driver

"You talkin to me?" scene was improvised by Robert DeNero.

5. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Unlike most good things, the Sword vs. Gun scene was caused by dysentery. Being in the hot Tunisian desert for so long gave Harrison Ford a serious case of the runs. For fear that he might shit his pants on set, Ford convinced Spielberg to change the scene to the now classic, "just fucking shoot him" scene.

6. The Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal Lecter's hiss was a joke by Anthony Hopkins, but it disturbed Jodie Foster so much it was kept in.

7. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Peter Sellers is often referred to as a third writer of Dr. Strangelove because so many of lines were improvised. Most notably the final line of the film.

8. Saving Private Ryan

Matt Damon's barn story was improvised by him

9. Caddyshack

The "Cinderella Story" sequence was improvised by Bill Murray

10. The 40 Year Old Virgin

The "You know how I know you're gay" scene was, much like a large portion of the film, unscripted

11. Shaun of the Dead

Nick Frost describing one of the regulars of the Winchester as an ex-porn star was improvised. Simon Pegg's laughter is a real reaction

12. Jaws

The line "We're going to need a bigger boat" was improvised. Thanks to TheFaithfullyDeparted for bringing this to my attention

13. Blade Runner

Rutger Hauer's "Tears in the Rain" speech was improvised. Thanks to PatheticMan for bringing this to my attention.

14. A Clockwork Orange

Malcolm McDowell improvised two of the most famous scenes: singing "Singing in the Rain" while raping the woman, and popping his mouth open while he was being fed. Apparently Stanley was bored during the last scene, so Malcolm just wanted to entertain him.

15. The Third Man

Orson Welles improvised the iconic cuckoo clock line: "In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." Thanks to ashogo for bringing this to my attention.

16. Casablanca

The line "Here's looking at you, kid" was improved by Humphrey Bogart. He originally used it in a different film, then he taught it to Ingrid Bergman between takes, and eventually improvised it in the Paris scene. They liked it so much that they brought it back again. Thanks (again) to ashogo for bringing this to my attention.

Oh whoops, I didn't know that was improved. I'll have to add it

Additional Dr. Strangelove improv moment: George C. Scott trips over his own feet and practically does a backward somersault. The dude did that on-purpose, unscripted! Genius.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Rutger Hauer's 'Tears in Rain' speech at the end of Blade Runner was improvised.
ThePickleon July 20, 2010 at 10:54 p.m.
@PatheticMan: I'll look into that. That speech was great.

edit: It was. I'm adding it to the list.

Awesome list by the way.

Great list. I'd love to hear a more detailed explanation to this:

The Sword vs. Gun scene was an impromptu result of Harrison Ford having food poisoning

@circle: I'm not 100% sure on the story but the original scene was supposed to be a sword fight between the two. Harrison Ford got food poisoning and dysentery, and convinced Spielberg to change the scene to just have Indy shoot him.

All were great scenes.

Great list, and even greater background.

Wow, I can't believe I've seen all these movies. First time I've seen a list and saw all the movies on it. Thanks Netflix!

Great list.  I did not know any of these.  The Blade Runner improve is just another reason why I love Rutger Haur now.

If I recall correctly, the "ex-porn star" in Shaun of the Dead wasn't a zombie during that scene; simply just another regular at the Winchester. Ed was trying to cheer up Shaun by telling him about all the "interesting characters" the place had to offer.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

great list :)

A couple of classic ones:

In The Third Man, Orson Welles improved the iconic cuckoo clock line. If you haven't seen it, Welles is playing this crooked guy who is trying to convince his buddy to join him in some criminal dealings that would cost hundreds of lives. To cap off his reasoning, he says: "In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace. And what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

The line "Here's looking at you, kid" was improved by Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. He originally used it in a different film, then he taught it to Ingrid Bergman between takes, and eventually improved it in the Paris scene. They liked it so much that they brought it back again.
