TheShaneTrane (Level 32)

Its 10:30. I'm a little drunk. Someone (who is a girl) should call me right now. I don't look as bad if it's your decision.

Quests » Are the quests just... dead?

Quests were such a great part of this community for me. I've been away for a little while, but I remember filing through so many movies and actors trying to find the solution to one riddle or another. And sure, there was a bit of "cheating" on the forums and some of the community based connection quests could be gamed with a little agreement between members, but there was something about the entire system that was too great for me to do those sort of things. I've still never gotten my 100 wall posts, and when I do I know it'll be earned as a reward for being a real part of this community.

The big move was a little while back and if that's why the ride is over, fine(?), but I would just love to see some of these things come back. It was part of that Whiskey charm and I miss it.

I'm filling out information on Austin Stories and I noticed that the episode count is off. There is no episode 13 in the series.

Could you please remove that single episode from the database?

General Discussion » The Great, Never Ending Screened-play

Dunkle opens up an antique pocketwatch without a face. He taps his haired tarsus against the glass that guards the exposed cogwork.

DUNKLE:  Oh, you're far more than that, my good boy.

Dunkle holds the time piece up to the sky and calibrates it to the sun.

DUNKLE:  Now, come along. We can't keep Her Majesty waiting.

CHANCE:  Her Majesty?

Portlandia » Have you guys seen this show?

I'm moving to Portland soon from Austin and I was surprised how well it riffs on that similar vibe that both cities share. I know a few local Portland comedians who are going to be in later episodes and I look forward to watching them fit into such a strong series.

From Austin Stories to Portlandia. Why do I keep moving to places that are so wrought for parody?

DVD » Do you think you'll own more Blu-Rays than DVDs?

Presently I own about 300 DVDs. I've just started getting Blu-Rays but the odds are I'll never reach that amount again. As long as DVDs remain backwards compatible with new technologies I don't see much reason to rebuy those films without SERIOUS added values presented. Is A Man for All Seasons really going to be any more amazing with a couple extra P's added to it?

And with things like Netflix and an emerging digital market I don't see that many disks in my personal future (regardless of the format).

General Discussion » Blockbuster files for bankruptcy

They need to just close the store down already. I have been sitting on copies of Wall-E and Zack and Miri for over a year now and I am totally not into paying back those late fees for forgetting to return them.

They need to either shut down or start an amnesty program.

Off-Topic » Cinemassacre about to start Monster Madness 2010 series

@ox: i think it could be pretty interesting. He lives in a Pee Wee like world of video game love and Back to the Future references with his hetero guitarist roommate who lives behind his couch. Throw in a road trip to a The Wizard like classic video game tournament and the Nostalgia Critic as his rival. Sign me up.

And hell, it is physically impossible for it to be any worse than The Fred Movie. What's to lose?

Off-Topic » What should the next Whiskey Media Site be?

music... what can we add to the subject? AllMusic.com has been around forever and as for other forms of wiki import what are we left with? genre discussions, legal issues with tabulature, people talking about a revival concert they say back in '92? That doesn't sound like too much fun. plus the video features and podcasts would be pretty depressing if they had to be contemporary.

food, books, and alcohol sound pretty interesting though.
How about action figures / toys (Mego talk - detailed information about Lego series - 3 3/4' indoctrination)? It's incredibly nerdy, but so is everything else we drink to when you really get down to it.

You add in those few subjects and there is pretty much a whiskey site for everything in my life that i care about... with my pants on at least.

Off-Topic » Cinemassacre about to start Monster Madness 2010 series

You might know him best as YouTube's ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD, but James Rolfe has been putting a lot more content than that on his site Cinemassacre.com for years.

Every October he puts on a series called Monster Madness in which he translates a life long love for horror films into 31 short features (one a day) that bring light to a different horror film you should know about. He spent a year on the classics, one on Godzilla films, and even one on lesser known horror films that never get much attention like Cemetery Man and the Coffin Joe series. These aren't really reviews as much as short documentaries about the history and trivia that surround these films.

He hasn't let on to the theme of this year's selection, but if the 90+ previous entries are any indicator I imagine they will definitely be worth giving a look if you're into finding something fun to obsess over this Halloween season.

TV » Poster vs. Title Card. Which should be a page's main image?

A poster to a film is your first connection to it online and in the theatre lobby. Their power is that these posters, at their finest, can compress the entire tone/content of a film into a single iconic image that will last forever in the mind of a fan.  The Sting.   The Godfather.  Star Wars.  When you hear those words what is the first image to fill your mind? (I would have said Animal House, but we're presently using a special edition box art for some reason...)

TV shows don't use this system. They use a constant string of different cast photos to advertise every event and season that goes live or to dvd. Their boxset covers and fullpage magazine ads are largely ephemeral and just fall short of the iconic stature of a movie poster.

They do however have title cards.

I've primarily been focusing on filling out the comedy sketch shows in the archives and the more I work through the more I realize that title cards to television shows are images that become ingrained in our minds. And not because of an advertising push of an image on every bus in town, but because it is the single frame that occurs the most throughout an entire series. And if the show is important enough to our community members to warrant trivia sections and episode guides the odds are that the emotional connection shared to it didn’t come from Season 3 box art or a throw away one sheet.

@Dudacles  you're completely wrong on that LOST comment. That image and tone will forever represent that show in my mind. I can see it with my eyes closed at a single strained note.

This is my comfort food.
This is my comfort food.

ps. interestingly, this is a battle that wikipedia went through as well and they sided with cards largely. (they can't always be wrong)

Can you please delete this episode of "That Mitchell and Webb Look." This series (as nearly every BBC series I can think of) does not have a pilot.

Louie » What were your thoughts on the season finale?

I thought it was a great ending. The late night set he did seemed like a logical conclusion to thing and then we are given this warm moment of a family having pancakes at 4:00am. It felt like the last episode of Rosanne without all of the circular narration and eff you vibe.

The best part... we have much more coming our way. Plus no one killed John Goodman.
