Lost Highway is a strange, strange movie.

Personal favourites as well as guilty pleasures, this is a list of all the good horror movies I've seen.

Still missing (not in database): Eden Lake, H6.
1. The Descent

One of the best horror movies I've seen. The dark claustrophic atmosphere and gripping intensity is unmatched by most peers.

2. Martyrs

This French masterpiece is a very divisive movie, but one thing is certain: you won't forget about it anytime soon.

3. The Thing

John Carpenter's best movie. Also, Kurt Russell kicking ass.

4. Shutter

The original, not the remake. Really creepy and underrated movie. Fantastic ending too.

5. 28 Days Later...

Rage-infected people are way more vicious and dangerous than your regular zombies.

6. 28 Weeks Later

Great sequel that builds upon the ideas established in the first movie.

7. Audition

A very slow-paced film that doesn't instantly identify itself as a horror movie, which makes the conclusion all the more disturbing and shocking.

8. One Missed Call

Another Takashi Miike movie with excellent atmosphere and creepy plot. Who knew cellphones could be so scary?

9. Antichrist

One of the bleakest movies I've ever had the (dis)pleasure of watching. It left me feeling both depressed and freaked out.

10. Let the Right One In

While I don't think this movie is all that scary, it does get under your skin. Beautiful cinematography and good child actors, too.

11. Calvaire

Really weird and messed up French movie. It's hard to know if you should laugh or be terrified.

12. The Orphanage

Very subtle but effective Spanish gem that proves you don't need tons of blood and gore to scare the viewer.

13. The Mist

The horror movie with the most divisive ending ever? Wether you like it or not this remains one of the best Stephen King adaptations.

14. Magic

Creepy ventriloquist horror with Anthony Hopkins in his early days. An overlooked gem.

15. The Eye

One of the better Asian horror movies I've seen. Some really unsettling scenes as well as some nasty jump-scares.

16. Alien

I doubt Ridley Scott's masterpiece needs any justification on this list.

17. Aliens

What this sequel may lack in subtlety it mores than makes up for with high-adrenaline action and thrilling tension.

18. Army of Darkness

Goofy. Silly. Campy. Groovy.

19. Orphan

Isabelle Fuhrman in the lead role delivers the best child actor performance I've ever seen. Multifaceted, creepy, and utterly convincing.

20. Dawn of the Dead

The best movie in the original Dead trilogy.

21. Dawn of the Dead

A really good remake/interpretation of the original movie.

22. The Ring

I do actually prefer the American remake to the original. Shocking, I know.

23. Dead Snow

Excellent nazi-zombie madness from Norway.

24. [REC]

As the name of the movie tries to hint at, this is one of those "entirely hand-held shot" movies. This Spanish infection horror gem is probably the best movie of that particular kind that I've seen.

25. [REC] 2

Continuing right where the first movie ended, Rec 2 is just as intense and unsettling as its predecessor.

26. The Collector

Surprisingly intense and gnarly movie that manages to avoid most of the annoying horror genre clichés. Simple story but good execution.

27. Hellraiser

While I consider Hellraiser to be more scary in theory than in practise, it's still a pretty good and enjoyable horror classic.

28. 1408

I think the most positive thing anyone could say about a "haunted house" horror movie is that it avoids being totally cheesy and campy. 1408 does avoid both those things quite well.

29. The Host

Great monster movie from South Korea. Not very scary but entertaining and impressive effects.

30. The Others

A very subtle and subdued ghost story. Best seen without knowing anything about it beforehand.

31. Beyond Re-Animator

This movie is absolutely insane and ridiculous. It almost had me in tears from laughing so much.

32. Re-Animator

Probably the best Lovecraft movie adaptation. Pure B-movie greatness.

33. Ils
34. Dracula

Bela Lugosi is a legend.

35. Paranormal Activity

Surprisingly good for its extremely low budget.

36. Inside

One of the bloodiest and most disturbing movies I've ever seen. Not for the faint of heart!

37. The Evil Dead

The gore effects in the Evil Dead movies are just pure awesomeness. So nasty and juicy, not to mention funny.

38. Ju-On

One of the more well-known Asian horror movies, and for good reasons too.

39. Dead Alive

Peter Jackson's splatter masterpiece never gets old.

40. The Devil's Backbone

Before Guillermo Del Toro became well-known he directed this great and overlooked gem.

41. Halloween III: Season of the Witch

The best movie in the series. Screw Michael Myers, he's the most boring villain ever anyway.

42. Halloween

Never cared much for the original movie (or the series as a whole). The remake is pretty decent though.

43. Nosferatu

Classic.

44. Hatchet

A very campy and non-serious movie with plenty of throwbacks to old 80s slasher flicks. Fantastic death scenes in this one.

45. Three... Extremes

Perhaps not that extreme, but very Asian which equals very weird and creepy stuff. "The Box" segment directed by Takashi Miike is easily the best of the three stories.

46. The Ring

One of the movie that started the whole "creepy skinny girls with black hair covering their face"-trend. Great movie, but I actually prefer the remake with the exception of a few scenes.

47. A Nightmare on Elm Street

The Nightmare on Elm Street series have always been pretty silly, but that's kinda what I like about them. The first one is probably the most balanced one though.

48. The Amityville Horror

Pretty cheesy and silly, but still a fun ride. Much better than any of the lame Poltergeist movies.

49. Trick 'r Treat

A very entertaining and fun horror movie divided into separate short stories that all take place on Halloween.

50. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

A modern exorcism movie that manages to make the whole idea of someone being possessed seem not cheesy. I was surprised by how good it was.

Great list!  Reminded me I NEED to finally see Triangle.

One edit though:

The Brain Dead you have listed is the one starring Bills Paxton and Pullman.  Peter Jackson's GLORIOUS Brain Dead is listed under it's american title, Dead Alive.

Thanks! I didn't notice that, I will change it right away.

Where's The Uninvited on here?? Where's The HIlls Have Eyes? Where's Wrong Turn???
You got some good movies on here but you're also missing some at the same time...

@TheChosenTwice: I haven't seen The Uninvited or Wrong Turn. I think The Hills Have Eyes is terrible so that's not making the list.

@Tordah:  Okay I'll admit that The Hills Have Eyes wasn't that great (unless you're a fan of sadistic horror like myself) but I think it should get a shout-out. Wrong Turn and The Uninvited were amazing....
You need to check them out.
