How did narration become such a defining trope of Noir?
on the General Discussion board.
It probably became a trope because much of the noir-esque storytelling that occurred in the early 20th century in the US was on the radio. Shows like Dragnet, Nightbeat, and The Adventures of Sam Spade defined what audiences expected from crime narratives later on. I think The Postman Always Rings Twice has narration, but I'm not 100% on that.
