So that they never truly wind up with the romantic interest at any point in the movie? That's rough. Not much of a plot for that much rejection. Casablanca is the only movie I can think of because the 'relations' (if there were any at all) were off screen.
Lots of bitter-sweet romance to go around, though (where they're together in the movie but not at the end). Pretty much any Woody Allen, notably Annie Hall. Also, Cabaret, Gone with the Wind, Shakespeare in Love, The Maltese Falcon, Waitress, etc., etc.
