I'm trying to keep track of every movie that I've seen in 2011, just for fun.
1. True Grit
Pretty good way to start the year off, thought the ending was weak though. |
2. Brick
I was hoping this would be good from what I had heard about it and it did not disappoint. |
3. Exam
Eh. |
4. Winter’s Bone
After examining my Netflix history, I'm still not totally whether or not I saw this movie this year or last year, but either way I enjoyed it. Not quite as much as I thought I would, based on how much Alex built it up, but either way it was a fine film. |
5. Splice
I thought that this movie was... interesting. I wasn't in a very serious mood when I saw it, so I found the sex stuff kind of laughable. The entire third act actually. I had forgotten that I even saw this movie this year... |
6. The Snake
The sixth time I've seen it I think. I still laugh at it. Truly a very funny movie which gets funnier on repeated viewings. Watch it. |
7. Oldboy
Third time I've seen it. Still great. |
8. Insomnia
Finally I've seen all of Nolan's movies. Not his best but still very good. |
9. OSS 117 - Lost in Rio
Not as good as the first, still some good laughs though. |
10. Love
Decent. Glad that I saw it at the world premiere, and it has grown on me, but in parts it dragged heavily. |
11. Donnie Darko
Sixth time I've seen it, probably don't need to tell you how much I love this movie. Later in the year, I also saw it for the seventh time. |
12. World's Greatest Dad
Really fucking great movie. Best I've seen this year so far. Edit: On Friday, March 11 I watched this for the second time. Still great. Also watched it Thursday, June 2. Even better. |
13. This Film Is Not Yet Rated
This is the kind of documentary that I can get into. Snappy, informative, revealing, and about a subject that I'm actually interested in. Really great. |
14. The Fighter
Wow. I was shocked by how great this movie was. Much better than I thought it would be, and I would be completely happy if it won best picture. Fantastic movie. |
15. The Square
I was expecting it to be "twistier". It was... ok. |
16. Kicking and Screaming
I loved it. |
17. Thirst
Very good. I think I liked it more than Lady Vengeance but not quite as much as Oldboy. Still, it has cemented my belief that Park Chan-wook is one of our greatest living directors, and I look forward to Stoker. |
18. Face/Off
I love me some crazy Nic Cage, and in that aspect this movie did not disappoint. I found the tone of the film to be delightfully ridiculous and strange, and there was some very good action. An odd movie, but entertaining. |
19. Source Code
Loved it |
20. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
I really loved this movie. Maybe it was just because I was in a Wes Anderson mood when I watched it, but I thought it was great. |
21. Mystery Team
For a low-brow, gross out comedy it was pretty good. |
22. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
I love revenge movies, but I sort of question why this movie was even made. I'll have to think on this one a while to decide how I feel about it... |
23. 2001: A Space Odyssey
I have FINALLY seen this classic film. The special effects are still amazing. It was so slow (I was so tired) that I almost fell asleep, but I'm glad I watched it. |
24. American Psycho
Really great. Love the satire and black comedy elements, and Bale's performance was fan-fucking-tastic. |
25. Bananaz
This movie made me love Gorillaz even more which I didn't think possible. A good documentary about a spectacular band. |
26. Kick-Ass
I do believe this was the third time I saw Kick-Ass. I'm still confused on the shit some people give this movie, I think it is fantastic. I can see how the Dave character could be seen as annoying, but he is supposed to be, and the Big Daddy warehouse scene and any scene with Hit-Girl make it all worth it. I stand by my five star rating. |
27. Pan's Labyrinth
A fucking masterpiece. I've been wanting to see this for a while, and I'm so glad I finally did. Dark and beautiful. |
28. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Second time I've seen this great movie. Wow I really haven't covered much new ground this year... But I got more out of Scott Pilgrim this time because I didn't start watching it at 1:00 in the morning. |
29. Rashomon
Truly a classic. I have begun my Kurosawa quest. |
30. I Saw the Devil
Dark as Hell. A grim movie watching experience, I'm still unsure what to think of this one. Fantastically gory, I even cringed at a few parts which I rarely do. I mean, shit, this is a dark movie, even for a Korean revenge film... But it's still a hell of an experience and worth watching if you can handle it. |
31. (500) Days of Summer
I know I watched this sometime, I just can't remember when. I'm pretty sure it was this year though, but I don't know when. I'll just throw it somewhere in the list. I love this movie. Especially recently, it has taken on new significance in my life personally, as my life has become this movie without the sex or the happy ending. Fun times. Great movie, though. |
32. Arlington Road
A decent enough paranoid thriller. Forgettable. |
33. Seven Samurai
I finally saw this. It took me three sittings to get through the roughly three and a half hour runtime, but it was well worth it. This film deserves its reputation one of the best ever made. Kurosawa quest continues, and I hope to watch the related movies from Rorie's "If you like Seven Samurai..." video. Anyway, Seven Samurai is amazing. |
34. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
I liked it more than I thought I would, so.... there's that. |
35. Mother
Just watched this. Great. While this movie was somewhat dark and sad, it was nice to see a Korean film that wasn't totally bleak and grim. Anyway I really enjoyed this one, it was very well crafted and now I feel like I need to see The Host... |
36. Trick 'r Treat
I was expecting this to be better (for some reason). It was decent. |
37. Akira
The animation and scope of this film were just incredible. The story was interesting too, but lost me a little bit at the end. Still, an anime classic. |
38. Bottle Rocket
Wow. This was really great. Wes Anderson before he knew what a Wes Anderson movie was. I think I've finally seen all of his films now, and this ranks among my favorites of his. I thought the love story was legitimately sweet, the characters memorable, and the heist scenes well shot. Kudos, Mr. Anderson. |
39. Sleeping Dogs Lie
After loving World's Greatest Dad so much I figured that I would check Bobcat Goldthwait's other movie. Although it had a few minor fallbacks, including lower production values (not too big a deal) and a weaker soundtrack (probably due to licensing costs, which is a shame because WGD had a fantastic soundtrack), it was still a great and unconventional film, and I look forward to Goldthwait's next. |
40. The Crying Game
That one part... you know the part I'm talking about... I mean... like I kind of knew in the back of my mind somehow, maybe because I had heard it somewhere before, but still.... whaaaaaaaat? A very good movie. |
41. 13 Assassins
After reading Pope's review for this I was really excited to see it. I enjoyed it a lot, although I didn't find the last half quite as mind blowing as Pope built it up to be. Still really great action though, and a good classic samurai tale overall. |
42. Ghost World
I really loved this movie. I wish more films like this were made, almost as much as I wish that Thora Birch was in more stuff. Anyway this one was great and really put me in a good mood. EDIT: I saw this again on June 15th. I have a feeling that it will become one of my favorite films of all time. |
43. X-Men: First Class
I thought this movie was great. It honestly makes me not want to watch the other ones ever again because to me it seemed such a step above in terms of quality. Really good stuff. |
44. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
Well fuck. This was a great documentary. Really moving. If anyone is reading this and they haven't seen this movie, just go watch it. Right now. |
45. The Adjustment Bureau
I saw this on a plane, which always sucks, so that may have influenced my opinion of this film a bit, but overall, I thought it was a decent enough sci-fi romance film, with not enough emphasis on the sci-fi. |
46. A Tale of Two Sisters
Another great Korean movie from Ji-woon Kim. I thought that the exposition at the end could have been done in a less confusing way, but overall it was an interesting and very well directed film. |
47. The Boondock Saints
Finally, I am a man, because I saw this film. Kind of shitty but totally awesome. |
48. The Chaser
Another brutal Korean thriller. This was... intense. |
49. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
A classic. A very slow classic. It was very, very slow, and I saw the ending coming, but still I'm glad that I watched this film. |
50. Pulp Fiction
Finally I have seen it. It was amazing, as most people know. Watch it if you haven't. |
Great olde list, I'll be coming back to this. I recommend you watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
