The Dark Knight Rises is the second-highest grossing film of the year, 22nd of all time worldwide, and well on its way to crossing the billion dollar mark. But when you adjust for inflation, this story is a whole lot less impressive. It turns out Batman, the 1989 Batman film directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, sold 12 million more tickets. The following weeks are expected to close that gap a little, but it still seems almost impossible that the gap will shrink to less than 10 million tickets.
In its entire run, The Dark Knight Rises will sell 10 million less tickets than Batman! Wow!
