Way to stay incredibly dull CBS. I swear the last worthwhile and interesting show they aired was Twin Peaks.

So far only Chronicle, John Carter, and The Avengers. I would go see a lot more if I had access to a decent theater. My local one's only got 4 screens, next closest town that would have more is 3 hours away. I would have driven that to see Cabin in the Woods, but my car broke down in January.

@ashogo said:I love Shostakovich's String Quartet no. 8. Deeply sorrowful, full of such breathtakingly absolute despair and terror.Yes, he's just about my favorite classical (technically neo-classical?) composer of the 20th century, mostly for his influence on the music of the horror genre.I guess the closest thing on my list to that would be Rage Against the Machine, which is kind of rap-rock/metal. Do you ever listen to them?I respect them ...

Film is a storytelling medium. Music, while it can be, isn't necessarily. It's as simple as that.

@ashogo: I just can't agree with that. I'm not saying it isn't incredibly flawed. Or even a good movie. It's a failure, but such a spectacular and interesting one, that I just can't help but like it. Yes, Nick Nolte is terrible and Josh Lucas isn't much better, but everyone else did a perfectly sevicable job.I like the fact Lee went a bit nuts in the editing bay because at ...

I suspected a lot of those themes you mentioned were at play each time I've watched the movie, but have never been able to articulate just what exactly I liked about it nearly as well as you have. Good show.

I don't listen to any of those. Not my thing. Nonetheless, I do have a great deal of respect for the talent of Miles Davis, Ray Charles, and The Clash.

I really think that one is unfairly maligned. I can think of hundreds of movies, and probably dozens of comic book movies, that are much much worse.

So my New Year's resolution was to finally get around to watching some of these movies that anyone calling themselves a cinephile should've seen by now. I set aside so much time every week for watching movies that I figure at least one of them should be a bonafide classic. Especially since even the shitty Canadian version of Netflix has such a good selection of classics. So every Friday I'll ...

52 Weeks, 52 Classic Movies #18: New Year's resolution: Watch and review one classic movie every week for a year.Week #18: Out of the Past, in which Robert Mitchum embodies the archetypal noir protagonist, tilted fedora, battered trenchcoat, droopy cigarette, veiled threats and all. He’s matched note for note by Jane Greer as the archetypal femme fatale, a depiction I imagine countless subsequent writers and actors to have drawn inspiration from. The film as a whole ...

vonDread reviewed Laura.

52 Weeks, 52 Classic Movies #17: New Year's resolution: Watch and review one classic movie every week for a year.Week #17: Laura, in which we see a slew of actors, Clifton Webb and a young Vincent Price included, unconvincingly vie for the affections of murder victim Gene Tierney. It wasn’t much of a secret that Webb was gay, and his somehow Oscar-nominated performance here does little to convince us otherwise. The argument could be made that ...

If the OP doesn't mind, I thought I'd tackle some of these being the gigantic comic geek I am.@Acura_Max said:1. Are The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. the same organization? No, SHIELD is this massive paramilitary espionage organization and global peacekeeping force comprised of mostly non-powered human agents that answers to the UN. 52 Weeks, 52 Classic Movies #16: New Year's resolution: Watch and review one classic movie every week for a year.Week #16: The Graduate, in which Mike Nichols and Co. do their best to convey a message about the ultimate uncertainty of life, and find only modest success until the film’s iconic final shot. This was Dustin Hoffman’s star-making role in Nichols’ most celebrated work, a massive box office success that’s now considered one of the all-time ...

It's unfortunate most of Joss Whedon's work on it was thrown out the window, but the end result is still pretty entertaining.@litrock said:My main problem with Vasquez (and Ripley to a lesser extent) isn't their role in the movie, but how much they've influenced what ...

I just can't help but draw different conclusions from the depiction of Ripley, and Vasquez in particular. I'm a staunch supporter of any serious attempt to place female characters in the role of hero, but in this particular case they burden Ripley with a tragically cliched "mama grizzly" aspect to her character that just wasn't necessary to sell her as a capable action hero. It's like the writers thought the ...
