After having watched the new Shrek movie in 3D, I started thinking about the necessity of using 3D in movies. I must admit that I was truly impressed by the use of 3D in Avatar when I watched it in cinema. However, we have to bear in mind that Avatar was made specifically for 3D and James Cameron spent millions of dollars just to get it to the right effect. On the other hand, we have movies like Shrek Forever After and Alice in Wonderland, where the 3D sessions in cinemas are seen more as a bonus feature to the main movie. In comparison to Avatar, the 3D in these movies, while achieving their goals, still weren't that impressive. Furthermore, the use of the 3D glasses is a big pain for me, since I already have a pair of glasses, and I'm sure its a bit of a pain even for people who don't wear glasses. Finally, the development of 3D on home TV's is almost impossible in my opinion, since the cost of a 3D supporting TV and all the other tech needed to support it would cost huge amounts of money. Overall, while I think that 3D is extremely popular now, it won't last for long due to the cost and impracticality of it (at least in its current state).
