General Discussion » All of the hullabaloo around the Star Wars blu-rays inspired me.

With everyone up in arms at George Lucas' most recent attempts to modify the Star Wars trilogy, for better or worse, I mocked up the following box set. Listen up Lucasfilms, release this and you can have my money:

The fact is, no one is buying Star Wars to see it look any different than it did when they were children. What Lucasfilms seems to fail to realize, is that they're not really selling movies to their target audience, they're selling nostalgia. I want to watch these and be reminded of a time when I was young enough to believe that somewhere out there, Han Solo was being a badass, Luke was learning to master his Jedi powers, and the Rebel Alliance were fighting the good fight in the galaxy far, far away.

General Discussion » My first attempt at a retro movie poster

@Mushir: Looking at this on a different monitor, I can see what you say about the green. Fixed it up top.

General Discussion » My first attempt at a retro movie poster

I'm not someone with a graphic design background, but I've been poking around in photoshop and illustrator for awhile now. Seeing all these minimalist and/or retro style posters floating around online. I decided to take a stab at one that's near and dear to my heart. So, what do you think?

A Serbian Film » So i watched this last night.

I've not seen it, but I remember when it was going around to film festivals and reading reactions online. After hearing some of the things that happen in this movie, I don't need to have those visuals in my mind. I mean, the scene with the baby? Fucked up.

Screencast » Questions for 9/27 podcast!

Another film podcast that shall remain nameless had a discussion about what makes for an interesting biopic recently. My question to you, do you have any favorite biopics and is there anyone whose life you'd like to see turned into a biopic?

General Discussion » Screened, please do a feature on "Christmas with a Capital C"

When the holidays roll around, I sincerely hope you will do a 30 Days of Hate-esque feature covering bad holiday movies and put this on the list. "Christmas With a Capital C" is a Christian-produced film that is basically "How the Athiest Stole Christmas". Just watch the trailer:

General Discussion » Uwe Boll is making a holocaust movie

It's been reported on several film sites and that's Boll in the Nazi guard uniform in the trailer.

General Discussion » Uwe Boll is making a holocaust movie

If you're familiar with Boll's  oeuvre there's not much more I can say other than he's trying to make a serious film about Auschwitz. What's the chance this is the most tasteless film ever made?

General Discussion » Calling All Washington DC Film Geeks! (And others)

Hey everyone,

I really hope this post doesn't come off as too spammy but I wanted to let people know about a new project that I'm trying to get off the ground. I've been a pretty big film geek for awhile, and living here in Washington, DC, I've always wondered why there was no strong film community. I mean, we have some great indie theaters, cool cult film showings, etc, but no real community based around it.

I've been doing some review writing mostly for my own benefit, but got some positive feedback and decided to try my hand at putting together a locally focused film site. I've named it ScreenDC.com - yes, I know it sounds a lot like Screened but that was unintentional, I'd had the domain for awhile - but I recently launched it and am trying to get some tips, comments, critiques, etc. So, take a look at www.screendc.com and let me know what you think.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo » The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Is on Netflix Watch Instantly

@VanDammage: Haha - yeah agreed, my touch stones for swedish culture were meatballs, bookcases named "Billy" and muppet chefs.

That said, reading the other 2 books in the series, there are some scenes which directly involve Ikea.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo » The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Is on Netflix Watch Instantly

@VanDammage: I saw it in theaters here and yeah... during "the scene", it was actually sort of awkward to look around and see everyone watching what was going on on screen. Profoundly disturbing stuff in that film.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo » The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Is on Netflix Watch Instantly

Netflix has added this really great Swedish crime thriller to Watch Instantly. Especially if you've read the books, you'll probably be quite happy with how well this story has been adapted. A great watch if you're in the mood for something dark.

Watch it here.

The Last Airbender » Not looking good for "The Last Airbender"

With early reviews putting it at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics decrying bad, muddled 3D added in the post-processing phase, stilted dialogue and messy editing, we might just have an epic bomb on our hands. Sad, because the story from the animated show is really quite good, and this continued decline of the once-promising Shaymalan is just depressing.

General Discussion » Overused Trailer Songs

Another one, used in way too many feel-good movie trailers... Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill

@nofx4208: Though granted, I feel that that music has sort of become short-hand for "working a job filled with mindless tedium".

General Discussion » Overused Trailer Songs

@nofx4208: The Wall-E trailer used the music from Brazil - but given the them of the movie, I almost saw it as an homage to Gilliam's film

Aquarium by Camile Saint-Saens - when you hear it, you'll know it as the song used when ever something is supposed to sound vaguely mysterious yet whimsical:

The American » The Poster for 'The American' is a thing of retro-inspired beauty

George Clooney's next film looks pretty great, but man, if this isn't the best poster I've seen in awhile.
