Okay, people are saying questionable things about this.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: That scene you mentioned was really freaky. Yeah when it wants to be freaky then you're right, it has a great bit of tension.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: About the last scene..

Really? I thought it looked freaking awesome. Especially when it protruded that tell tale second mouth. A very cool beginning to the creature. Do you remember what the Alien looks like in the other movies? A spindly man with a giant elongated head.

Anyways, unless you went in thinking this was going to be exactly like Alien then I find it hard to believe you couldn't find some of the best sci-fi in years, even ever, here. It certainly has a very different feel than Alien, with way less of a focus on horror, but I thought it managed to balance itself out well. Also throwing in some fantastic moments of wonder when certain things were revealed. People really just need to get their expectations in check, you can't go into a movie thinking you already know how it should go and then be surprised when you end up disappointed.

I'm glad it's so different from Alien thematically and I don't think it would have benefited at all by not being a prequel to it. Some of the best moments were the clever reveals that give you recognize from the first film. It brings up some questions sure, but it also answers a ton. We now know their true origin and why they exist. That's huge. Wrapping up everything so nicely isn't all it's cracked up to be, mystery is always a welcome addition.

@dezvous:

My problem with it was that it was too skinny to look menacing at all. While I realize it still needs to evolve a little they made it seem too baby like

Caveats and besmirchments aside, I'm still eagerly looking forward to viewing Prometheus on Tuesday.

I still really believe that this is perhaps one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever made. There are just so few good ones in the genre to begin with which definitely helps it achieve this for me. There is just so much more thought put into this series than seemingly anything else out there in this genre. No one seems to care to bring something new and original to the table. I believe we owe most of it to HR Giger and the producers allowing him to just go wild with the first movie. No one is willing to take a chance today it seems. Which is crazy, because of most of the movies that do end up making great money.

Saw the movie the other day, and came away somewhat disappointed.

My problem was with the characters - some of the dialogue that came out of their mouths was laughable.

In particular, I thought David's open hostility towards humans was laid on a little too thick. It never seemed like he was trying to hide his motives - rather, it seemed like he was pretty overtly telling everyone on the crew how he hated humanity. I actually thought Idris Elba's character was the most likeable and most human of the lot. The rest seemed to exist only to act as fodder, relay themes, or spout out (some unecessary) exposition.

The "Father" scene with Theron was also a little weird, and a lot of the characters' actions seemed to fit horror cliches to the T. The biologist's completely idiotic cooing to a completely new alien life form stuck out as the kind of thing you'd find in a B-horror movie. For a group of (presumably) brilliant scientists, they make a lot of dumb, rash decisions considering they're on an unexplored planet with never-before-seen architecture and life.

That being said, the movie looks great and it does try to tackle some interesting questions. Maybe I'll enjoy it more a second time when I can concentrate on the visuals and those questions rather than sussing out the plot or figuring out the characters.
