Will You Watch Alien Before Prometheus?

Prometheus is coming out in a month's time so it begs the question: will you watch Alien for the first time or re-watch it in preparation for Prometheus?

Personally, I haven't seen Alien in perhaps five or more years and I can't remember all the smaller details, but the broader picture I do. I want to go into Prometheus cold, I haven't really seen much in the way of the promotional footage for it and at this point there is so much secrecy involved with the picture that watching Alien again could spoil something. But I do want to watch Alien again.

Anyway, what's your plan for the lead up to Prometheus? Will you watch Alien again? Will you marathon the entire franchise? Or marathon the franchise in the way of watching the first two films only?

Good question, I may gather with some friends and give it a watch soon. If that doesn't pan out I doubt I will, i've seen it too recently.

I bought the Alien blu-ray box set a while ago..so I just watched all 4 of them. I'm gonna go and see it but NOT IN 3D, cause fuck 3D.

Already watched the first three in preparation. I must say I was quite underwhelmed by them.

Watched all four fairly recently.  Alien and Aliens still hold up and while I prefer Aliens (I personally prefer action/adventure over horror) I still think Alien is the best Sci-Fi Horror movie ever made.  The Special Edition version of Alien 3 is actually decent but it is still mediocre at best.  Alien Resurrection starts strong and then just falls apart really quickly.  Which is sad because it has some really interesting characters and a unique story that never reaches its full potential.

@RockinKemosabe: Of course I will I think its more likely that I'll be able to see some winks and nods that Ridley Scott puts in that reference the original than spoil anything of actual use in Prometheus

Pretty much this for me, except I enjoyed Alien a little bit more.

I also agree.

Actually my favorite part of Alien was the initial exploration of the planet and the relics that they find.
These scenes just gave the rest of the movie gravitas and mystery. Even after the encounter you think back to the initial scenes and think, "how did they get there?" and "Why did they only semi resemble the dead alien at the telescope or communications relay?"

For these reasons I am way too excited for Prometheus.

I've been really torn on Prometheus. Every aspect seems perfect (cast, design, etc.), and I fully expect to love it, but it also seems SO FUCKING MUCH like a clone of Alien that I think it's probably best to try and mentally separate the two. That way, you're just thinking, "Prometheus is awesome!", rather than shit like, "Oh, that thing was better when they did it in the first flick".

@gangly: I agree with that sentiment. In interviews with Ridley Scott he talks about the difficulties with making sequels in series such as Alien. He says that the Alien will never be as scary the second time around. This movie seems to be a revisiting of the universe rather than a direct prequel or sequel.

I've never seen any of the Alien films (well Alien vs. Predator but I don't think that counts) and honestly don't really plan to. I know all the hype and science fiction behind it all but it doesn't appeal to me. More than likely I'll see Prometheus and either go back into the Alien catalogue for reference or just leave at the one film.

@Rowen545: That is a good take on it, i mean really! wow!

I'm not in a big rush to see this and here are the 3 reasons

ok 1 Guy Pearce is in it, so it lose's points,

2 but mostly it looks like it has different aliens.

3 the last thing it takes so long to make one of these things! First a queen lays an egg, then out comes a face hugger, then the face hugger lays another egg into a host, then out comes a chest buster, and it grows in a Xenomprph

Maybe just Aliens, because I haven't seen that one yet.

Umm Guy Pearce is a legend, Sir, show him some respect. Bonus points to Prometheus for his appearance in the film.

@Nightriff: I think Lockout is the most out of place movie for Guy Pierce. Guy Pierce is a very good actor but has a difficult time choosing mainstream releases sometimes. This is why I am excited to see him in Prometheus.

*I'm trying not to go into a tangent on the oddity that is Lockout*

@Rowen545: I view his career as bad choices and bad luck. I love Guy Pearce. Usually I enjoy the movies he appears in, or at least his role in the movie, and I really thought he would be a B level star after Momento. Not a huge star but someone who could draw a crowd of people and movies he is in do well. But Time Machine didn't work out and I guess that was is one chance really.

No.

However, I can say that Prometheus is going to be my first IMAX movie ever. I'm fucking stoked as shit for this!

If only it was also D-Box where I'm going...

I didn't, but it didn't effect anything when I watched it.

Note Prometheus isn't Alien. If you go expecting that it will just end in disappointment. If you don't look at it in that perspective it's a good movie :)

It's been years since I last saw Alien and Aliens. I think the best thing to do would be to watch Prometheus first with an open mind, and then maybe see the Aliens movies after that. I'm still not clear if Prometheus really is a prequel, or just in spirit.

Regardless, I am so excited for the movie since it comes out next week.

Saw Prometheus last night-I had never seen or heard anything about the Alien series apart from my boyfriend telling me about them. So as a result I had to watch Alien this morning. I highly recommend Promentheus no matter what your approach is to viewing it as it will stand alone even with its similarities to Alien (in my opinion) @rowen545 Guy Pearce is in it it - you won't know it's him! Fassbender is super too.
